Shipping items to Zurich - detailed 18.44 questions

I am moving from Austin TX to Zürich for a job on May 1. I am shipping 3 boxes of personal items from the U.S. to Zürich, all of which will arrive after I do. To avoid import duties, I need to fill out a 18.44 document, and I have a good handle what to put on that document based on the forum response here. Basically fill it out, and if you are like me and don't have a residence permit yet, just attach your proof of "transfer of domicile". For me this was an airbnb receipt showing I had booked temporary lodging for 30 days.

I am shipping my boxes through USPS, seems to be the cheapest way. More details on shipping USPS from US to Zurich here. They emphasize writing "personal items" on the packing slip and the box.

My questions:
1. Where do I put the 18.44 documents? Inside the packages? On the outside of the packages? Elsewhere?
2. People describe needing to itemize what is in their boxes in a list. Where should I put this list? I presume with the 18.44 document?
3. Is there anything else I need to do, other than fill out the form, put it (and associated documents) in/on the box, take it to USPS and ship it?

Any detailed response would be appreciated!

Welcome to the Forum.

Check with your local post office. When my mom sent some items to me, the Post attached a little plastic sleeve to the box. It contained the 18.44 and the description of items, and was kept nice and dry from the rain.

Thanks 3wishes! Did she include a copy of your residence permit, or at least proof of "transfer of domicile"?

No, because it was marked as a gift. It was one box. Now that I think about it, I wonder if it was really a 18.44 or if it was the standard CN 22. It was so close after my move and that was several years ago. All I remember was the little sleeve they put the forms in, which I hoped would be helpful info.

Ugh, sorry if I muddled it up.

shipping personal items before receiving residence permit - 18.44 form questions

Hello,

I am moving to Zurich from the US (non-EU) soon, and have already received my work visa. I would like to ship a few boxes ahead of time so they are present when I arrive. To do so, without being charge import taxes, I need to fill out a 18.44 form. In addition, the form requests the following documentation:

a) a list of the goods to be imported; goods which are imported as subsequent consignments are to be decla- red on a separate list. Goods which do not meet the requirements, are to be itemised at the end of the list as «goods for normal customs clearance»;

b) the Swiss residence permit, except for immigrants from the first 25 EU states and from the EFTA states;

c) the official, foreign registration certificate for the means of transportation;

d) proof that a house or a flat has been purchased or rented.

I can handle (a) and (d) no problem. However, I do not have a residence permit (b), I was told I would receive that once already present in Zurich. Also, if anyone could clarify (c) that would be great, I have no idea what it means.

Is there any way to ship my personal items without being taxed before obtaining my residence permit in Switzerland? Its difficult to mail stuff from the US once I am in Europe!

I didn't have a residence permit either when I imported the first bunch of my stuff. Just leave it empty and explain if anyone asks... I would also attach my work visa (however I didn't need that).

First, why a new thread? Here the other one: https://www.englishforum.ch/permits-...ml#post3063721
better keep all in one place.

Second, c) applies to a car, motorcycle to be imported.

Apologies, new thread because i feel like the last one was not specific enough. Happy to delete.

Thanks for clarifying on (c). Does this matter for bicycles?

No. Bicycles have no registration papers. At least not in Switzerland.

Re: shipping personal items before receiving residence permit - 18.44 form questions

Be sure to review very carefully any forms relating to moving household goods to CH. Ten years ago, I didn't notice on a form that I should have ticked the "partial shipment" box, which then would allow more time to complete the (much larger) shipment later, tax free. I would have saved the 8.5% importation VAT (based on insured cost of the later shipment). A very costly oversight, alas.

I used a company to transfer my goods to Switzerland from UK and I just realised in the returned 18.44 form there is no stamp or 13.2 form for my motorcycle.

Any suggestions what to do?

What did the relocation company say about this?

You paid them for the service, so they are surely the first place to contact / complain.

Already did. He said they showed the form and all docs but customs didn’t put any stamp… Great.. they have nothing else to add.

No idea what to do next…
