Family reunion D visa working right

Hello all,

I would like to ask your kind help or to share your experience about the family reunion visa for Switzerland. I am an non-EU with a work permit in Luxembourg. My husband is French and is working in Zurich with a B permit. Recently, I found a job in Zurich so I would like to join him in Zurich and start the process to apply the family reunion visa. I understand the general process that I need to apply for the D visa to enter in Switzerland and then register myself in the canton.

My questions: ‘if D visa is approved, does the D visa already allow me to work in Zurich or I have to wait for the resident permit to be ready?’ ‘How long it takes to have the resident permit once registered in the canton?’ ‘ does it help to mention that I have a job offer in the visa application process?’

Thanks a million

My understanding: your husband is EU b-permit, so you will get the dependent EU b-permit (family reunification). This will give you the same rights to work as your husband - but your permit is linked to your husband's permit.

Thanks k_and_e.

Do you know if with the D visa I can already start to work in Zurich? Or I have to wait for the resident permit is issued.

D visa approval means nothing but you are just allowed to enter switzerland (it is just an ENTRY visa), you are not allowed to work under D visa. Once you are in switzerland, some paperwork and a matter of time until you get B permit

Here's an explanation, from another thread, of the difference between a visa and a permit.

Re: Family reunion D visa working right

Thank you all for the useful info.

I received a call from HR today. He said he called the immigration office and I am entitled to have the B permit. Since I have a employment contract and EU resident permit, i shall go to the registration office and ask for the resident permit by providing my marriage certificate, my husband’s B permit and my employment contract. If you have similar experience, please share with me.

In any case, my husband will ask this information at the registration office and I will provide update for those who are also interested in this subject

I got the reply from the Zurich immigration office. For EU citizen’s spouse who has resident permit in EU, he/she can enter Switzerland and directly register in the local office and ask resident permit. Of course, the official way is to ask for D visa to enter and then ask for resident permit. Somehow, the immigration office accept the both options.

This issue would only be a problem if you were not known europe and thus needed a visa to enter. Since you’re already already here they just skip to the next step.

Re: Family reunion D visa working right

Does anyone know if I will immediately have the right to work after I registered in zurich or after the B permit is issued?

Sorry for keep asking for this as I am under the pressure from the future employer to start on time.

Thanks,
