host family for 16 y.o. student

Hi!

I'm entering eth this year but I'm only 16 y.o. and I'm from Ukraine.

The problem is that until I get 18 I can't live alone. So, I'm planning to live in Baden (as it close to Zurich) and trying to find a host family for me.

Does anyone know from where to start as I can't find even point from where to search. Google gives nothing.

Thanks!

Have you tried asking at the ETH? They might be able to provide you with some contacts.

Good point and that what I planned to do today, but, if true, I have doubts they will provide any help on that.
Anyway will try and let you know about results. thanks

Authorities of Switzerland
What reason(s) did they mention?

I understand your post as meaning that you're too young, that would be simply false. In fact as long as the parents give permission, and assuming a "normal" situation in the sense that the kid is able-bodied and able-minded and Ok with it, it would be perfectly fine from a Swiss perspective for you, a 16yr-old, to live here, separate from your parents.

However, the answer might well be the opposite if you were 15yrs old. And that doesn't take Ukranian law into consideration, nor the fact that you'd need a Swiss residence permit.

That said, living alone you'd probably feel even more lonely than you probably (at least at the start) will be anyway, I don't think it would be recommendable. But if you can't find a host family, a stundent commune (word?) might be an option.

Re: host family for 16 y.o. student

I think there are other issues that need to be taken into consideration. As a minor, the OP cannot enter into contracts and his legal reps have to do it (parents). Living on his own, OP cant run to his parents everytime something needs signature. Maybe thats why he is needed to have a local/legal guardian sort of?

I'm not sure, as I had no talk directly to authorities, just lawer said that all requests for student visa for minors which dont have 18 y.o. in Zurich canton were denied.

With host family (or parents present) Aargau canton I can get permission, but again, only with host family, not alone.

That what I have been told.

You are probably best going directly to the authorities and asking them. It is a rare situation, i.e. most students come here when they are 18+ so you will need some official clarification. I'm not sure a lawyer is the best option to give that information, although they will gladly take your money.

How did you secure the place at the ETH in the first place? They would also be a good point of contact to find out more.

For now it's not a place, it's just approve that I can pass the entrance exam.

Then do that first and I am sure ETH will have had this issue before and can give you guidance?

ETHZ is in ZH, not AG, so how would living in AG solve your problem?

You would get a permit for ZH, not AG.

Urgent: need a host family in Zurich

Good Day!

I will apply to student visa soon, and as I'm not yet 18 I need a host family according to the law.

I'm ready to pay for my accomodation and I'm pretty independent, so I don't need an extra care.

Maybe anyone could help me with this trouble or make a hint how to solve this problem. I have a week to find a host family for me.

Thanks!

Does your university/school have programs that can help?

Re: host family for 16 y.o. student

My guess is legallyspeaking is on the right track. OP is probably looking for a sponsor family, not just a place to stay. A sponsor provides a signed financial guarantee to cover all expenses, particularly in case of emergency, illness, etc.

I still think you're getting ahead of yourself, studenteth. You say you haven't been admitted yet. Pass the exam first.

no, I'm not seeking a sponsor family. I have proves of financial means and that is not problem. The thing is while I'm under 18 I cant live alone in foreign country.

Visa issuing during 3 months. If I will not apply visa in a week (already booked appointment) I would not be able to attend lessons as it will not be ready in time.
I will pass exams.

If it means what others have written, being a host family would implicate a financial involvement. Do you have the funds to cover that?

Also, being a student in Switzerland, you have to show you have adequate funds for your study, and a host family, being responsible for you as you are a minor, would probably ask for that as well

Yes, I have funds. They require 21000CHF account and that's not a problem.
So I don't need any financial support, only guest family to live with, as I can't live alone by the law.

Re: host family for 16 y.o. student

You might consider contacting the Swiss-Ukrainian Verein; perhaps they might know of families who might be interested in hosting a fellow national:

http://swiss-ukrainian.ch/de

Also, it would be helpful if you could track down and post an official statement from whatever Swiss authority has made this ruling or better yet a link to the regulation. Anyone considering hosting a stranger, even moreso a minor, needs to know exactly what they are getting into, in legal (would a host stand in loco parentis?) and financial terms. Always best to go to the official source.

Hope you find a solution.
