In February 2020 it will be 5 years since i moved to Switzerland. I have been working all this time and have settled down with my swiss girlfriend. But the future of my company is not sure. It is possible that we wont be around in year 2020, meaning that i could be unemployed right at the moment when I should get a second B permit. I'm an EU citizen living in BS.

Do you know what happens to my status if it comes to that? Will I be able to renew it, will they give me 6 months to find something? I want to be prepared.

Greek citizen, living in VD. B permit valid until September 2011. In July 2011 I got unemployed. I got my C permit in September 2011 without any problems.

Times and regulations have changed. Had to show a letter that I was employed to get a C in 2014. Could be another B for one year?

Does RAV count as employment in such circumstances?

You need to be in a job when applying for a permit C.

It doesn´t say what happens if you are not.

The official rule on 5 year B permit is

Lose job within first 12 months and register with unemployment office: B valid until 6 months after you lose your job, unless you find another one in that period.

Lose job after first 12 months and register with unemployment office: B valid until 6 months after end of unemployment insurance.

The unemployment office has the obligation of communicating to the migration office which foreigners are unemployed.

If unemployed at renewal point canton reserves the right to renew B for 1 more year (condition for C is disposing of sufficient financial means and participating in economic life / acquiring training). If still unemployed then technically you can be asked to leave.

Afterwards it comes down to each canton to see how they apply the rules.
