Married, permanent residence in Basel, working and temporary living in Lausanne

Hello All,

We are non-EU and I am on a family reunification visa in Switzerland (wife's B-permit starts in August and hence I can also start working). My wife is working in Aargau canton and we live in Basel.

I secured a job in Lausanne and I am going to have to spend 2 weeks a month (probably every alternate week) there. My wife will continue to stay in Basel and I plan to spend weekends and the other 2 weeks in Basel.

1. Can I keep Basel as my primary place of residence and also rent another small temporary apartment in Lausanne?
2. I am registered in the canton of Basel. Do I need to register with the canton in Lausanne if I rent there?
3. Where and how would I expect to be taxed (Basel or Lausanne, especially if I rent a temporary apartment in Lausanne)?

Thanks a lot for your input.

1. Yes
2. No
3. Basel since that's your place of residence.

Actually, thinking on 2 you may need to register since landlords/agencies are required to let the relevant commune know of people renting any of their properties. But it shouldn't affect your permit status and tax will still be in Basel since that will be your main base.

ER member HappyCreature may be able to tell you more about it since they're in several locations here.

I guess I can go to the canton office in Lausanne and check with them once I am there.

HappyCreature - If you have been in a similar situation, would be good to hear your view and experience.

it is better to ask canton office in Lausanne because as far as i know, landlords are obliged to report to the authorities about their tenants to the local gemainde. so you need to explain this to the local gemainde that your center of life will be in Basel. Another point to note, you can only be registered at one place at any point in time, so your assumption that you can register both in Basel and Lausanned is not correct.

cheers

Thanks HappyCreature. I wasn't sure if he needed to register in Lausanne or not because of the landlord informing the commune or not.

I don't think it's register in Lausanne exactly but it's declare that you're a Wochenaufenthalter or weekly resident who will return to the family home on weekends in Basel. I have no idea what Wochenauftenthalter is in French, sorry.
