Fraud Call - Deportation

Hello All,

I am non - EU working in Switzerland.
Yesterday I received a fraud call stating that the call was from Embassy in Switzerland.

The caller mentioning name as David Willson ,told me that because of some mistake in my immigration form, I will be deported unless I either went back to India within 2 hours or I pay processing charges for verification by swiss government.

Additionally, the caller mentioned that a legal case is filed against me.

The detail and way of speaking of the caller was very convincing but as I clearly remembered that I did not fill any form at immigration while coming to switzerland, I doubted the call.

The strangest part was that the calling number displayed was exactly same as that of the swiss embassy.

I mentioned the caller that I am ready to be deported but will not make any payment after which the call got disconnected.

I am posting this to make others aware that do not trust any such calls as they will most probably be fake and contact the swiss embassy directly.

Certainly do not make any payment

Re: Fraud Call - Deportation

If you get deported, the call will not come from the Swiss embassy. There is no Swiss embassy in Switzerland. A ministry of foreign affairs, yes.

Fake call to extort money

That's deflected smartly! I hope, for your sake, that you are not, in fact, about to be deported.

Additionally, the caller mentioned that a legal case is filed against me.
I remember that many years ago a fraud caller once tried this on me in a completely different context. I answered: "Oh, dear, my paperwork is so overwhelming. Would you please give me the Case Number, so I can look it up in my papers, and see what progress has been made?" and then, too, the caller hung up immediately. Now, however, crank callers never get beyond their first sentence, and then I'm the one who hangs up.

In fact, anything serious from the Swiss government will arrive in writing, on a printed letter in an envelope, and not by phonecall.

Re: Fraud Call - Deportation

Some 20 years ago I got a call in Swiss German from a gentleman who claimed he was from the Kantonspolizei.

It was before call recognition, so I asked for his number. He replied that it was „in the book“. He went on to explain that he was calling English-speaking foreigners to warn them to on the watch for attacks and violence.

I responded in English „Ah, if that‘s your job, your English must be pretty good.“

He hung up...

Re: Fraud Call - Deportation

Unlucky you. I only receive spam calls from different numbers all the time claiming that I should change my medical aid and definitely they can offer me a better deal than myself finding it in comparis.ch

I kept on explaining to them so many times before that I’m not interested, pleaded with them and begged them not to call me again and even ignored them once, twice or thrice but it didn’t help. I insisted that I’m rather healthy individual and at that point of time, I need no extra cover. They presented me with scenario what if I’m sick and why not to insure oneself now. They were even mocking me on the phone “I wish you stay healthy as you are now, I really wish you and all that nonsense ...”. They are so impudent and aggressive, change their call center numbers, tactics, manner of speaking that I would warn anyone faint-hearted not to fall for their callous practices.

It must really piss off some local telemarketing scavengers that one pays only around CHF265 per month and they should extort more dough from you. I hope these jobs will disappear from ledger one day.

Re: Fraud Call - Deportation

Jacek, why do you even engage with them? Why listen long enough to find out who they are and what they want?

Caller: Good morning, this is Joe Miller calling from a centre for…
Me: No advertising accepted on this number.

Or… possibly a genuine call:
Caller: Grüezi, this is Schmid, from your medical insurance and..
Me: Please send your query to me in writing. Thank you.
Caller: Oh, but we could discuss it now, on the phone.
Me: No, sorry, I don't have time. I'd much prefer it in writing. You have my mail address. Please write to me there, or by post. Thank you.

End of.

Wrong, you tell them you have multiple chronic conditions ranging from diabetes, HIV and pancreatic cancer and that your current provider was offering you a lot of cash if you change to another company.

They will soon delete you from their call list.

What? Switzerland doesn’t have a embassy in Switzerland. Do you mean their Embassy in New Dehli?

Spoofing numbers is a easy trick, I often get calls from numbers a few digits off from my landline number.

I guess I always give caller a chance to express oneself in few sentences first. As German is not my first language, there is a long listening pause before I get it where they are coming from. Before they utter this magic word in German “Krankenkasse” I still keep on holding on ...

Lol! Brilliant. Shall try it next time. (it will be tough to say it all in High German though!)

Re: Fraud Call - Deportation

That's the thing... I don't want to "get it where they are coming from", as you put it, jacek.

I know that if it is real, they will get to the point immediately: "I'm calling from Dr. M's practice to ask whether you could possibly see him half-an-hour earlier, tomorrow."

Anything else, I'm just too busy. I feel sorry for the people working in outgoing call-centres, where they earn by sales' commission only. For that reason, too, I cut them off as soon as possible, so they can get on with their next call. I don't want them to waste my time, nor do I wish to give them any false hopes. No is no. Asap.

I have a feeling that they do it often on purpose though. It is either to practice calls or simply to impress their colleagues next door. Not to mention to pretend that they are so busy on the job in case their boss is monitoring them. Welcome to corporate.
