Family Reunification Process

Hi. I am a third national currently residing in Qatar. My husband and I got married in Switzerland 5 years ago but he just recently got his Swiss citizenship. We are now planning to live together in Geneva where he currently resides. Does anybody here had the same situation as we are who can share their experience as to how long it took them to process their family reunification visa.

Re: Family Reunification Process

Around 7 to 8 months from my experience (also in Geneva), but if your husband is Swiss the process may be faster as there seems to be a better treatment for Swiss citizens.

Visa Authorization Letter

Hi Everyone,

I applied for family reunification visa and today, the application tracking status was updated to " En attente biométrie - Nous sommes dans l'attente de la prise des données biométriques." I have informed the embassy of this progress and they told me that they need an Authorization Letter from the Canton to issue the visa. Can somebody please guide me the next step to move forward with my application or how long does it usually take for the authorization letter to be issued from this stage? Do they send the letter by email or snail mail?

Thanks in advance for your valuable inputs.

Re: Family Reunification Process

Hi Jewel, how were you able to track it?
I am Lebanese and also applied to be reunited with my Swiss husband in September 2019. We’re still waiting for the permit to come out (4 months +).
I’m starting to get impatient about it... whenever we call they say it’s still being processed and cannot tell us when it will be done.
My embassy also said that they cannot know when it will be done as they are also waiting for the authorization to come out from Geneva for them to be able to grant me my visa.

Re: Family Reunification Process

Also, they should send your husband the authorization by mail. That’s what my embassy here in Lebanon told me.

Re: Family Reunification Process

Hi Aline. There is a tracking number which OCPM sent by email acknowledging that they have received your application. After week 12 from submission I wrote to the embassy requesting for them to followup since we always get the same response that it is on process. The embassy told me they don't usually do that but since my application is already almost 3 months so they obliged and same day my husband received an email from OCPM asking for him to submit proof of financial capacity. The day after we submitted that I checked the tracking that they have sent earlier and found out that the status has already been updated. My husband then went back to OCPM to request for a copy of the visa authorization. This is faster by a few days instead of waiting for it to come via post.

Re: Family Reunification Process

Oh okay thank you!
So what is the total number of weeks you had to wait from submitting the application to receiving the authorization?
Do you recommend my husband pays the OCP a visit to ask them for updates ot will it be useless?

Re: Family Reunification Process

Exactly 3 months. Well for us somehow it was still helpful for us since they were the ones to advise us to seek help from the embassy.

Re: Family Reunification Process

I still have one question if you don’t mind. Did they require you to take French lessons before moving? Of can I take language courses after I reach Switzerland?

As a spouse of a Swiss there is no language requirement to get permit B.
Language proficiency is only needed when you apply for permit C, which you can only after 5 years of stay in Switzerland.

Nevertheless it is wise to learn the local language ASAP.

Hello There.

I would like to ask the previous participants: Aline for example, if Did you get your family reunification visa? how long did the process take?
I put my application in November and I'm still waiting for the answer. Have you called somewhere special, to ask for? I appreciate your answers and suggestions.

Thanks

Re: Family Reunification Process

Hello Bonitayo, I haven’t gotten my visa yet unfortunately. I called my embassy last week and they assured me that Geneva are slow in processing visas in addition to the huge number of applications they receive.
The lady from the embassy estimated that mine should be processed this month. My husband is calling the OCP on daily basis but they are not answering.
However, once we gave them my reference number (you can get it from the embassy), it showed that the application has been received and is in the process. This is the only positive thing we got out of them, I guess.

Re: Family Reunification Process

Genevan contrôle des habitants is at the moment collapsed. In addition to the high number of files that they need to process compared to other cantons of similar size, they changed the system they use to process the applications this year and it is chaos. A wait of 12 months for a family reunification visa is now common.
