Changing Canton with Non-EU C permit

Hi,

Could anyone please share their experience or knowledge of the process/steps required to change cantons with a C permit (non-EU)?

I am trying to relocate from Zurich to Geneva and getting conflicting information from my Gemeinde and OCPM regarding the need for "pre-approval" to move as non-EU, when to register out of original canton, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Anna

Here the information for canton Zurich.
https://ma.zh.ch/internet/sicherheit...B6rigen+IW.pdf

You will need:
- Work contract
- Certificate that you did not request social aid within the last 3 years. (Unemployment benefit is not social aid)
- Debt register extract over the last 3 years.

With permit C it is more a bureaucratic hurdle as you have the right to change canton. Never the less you need approval from the new canton before you move or you could be fined.

I couldn't not finde more information about the process in canton Zurich. Contact the Migrationsamt and ask them directly what you should do: https://ma.zh.ch/internet/sicherheit...ufenthalt.html

Yes this point of approval is confusing me. Do I de-register from my original canton already, or wait for approval from the new one before I do that?

I have submitted the application for approval to Geneva migration office and was waiting for their response before I de-register from my Zurich Gemeinde.

Yet now the migration office in Geneva is saying I need to de-register from Zurich first, before they can review/accept my move to Geneva.

Of course, my worst fear here is de-registering from Zurich, getting rejected from Geneva and ending up... canton-less, or worse, somehow losing the permit C.

Nothing to worry if the migration office of the canton you are moving to gave the green light. Specially if you have it in writing.

As said, as a permit C owner you are entitled to move canton. Mmoving canton can only be denied in special circumstances. If you are in good standing, no criminal record, no past registered debt, no social aid you will get the approval as mandated by law.

You can deregister from your commune and give a future date for the move. The date you can decide by checking your new commune. This way you can still live there and await the decision.

Usually the new canton/commune requires that you apply much in advance and move only when you receive the invitation letter for registration.

The move even with the C permit is not straight forward for a non-eu. Especially when you have to find a place to live and take care of other contracts from your old location. Signing any new apartment contract before is a risk depending on the decision from new commune.
