Sequencing: health insurance contract and registration w/ municipality

Hello everyone. I have read that registration with the municipality requires a health insurance contract and must be accomplished within eight days of arrival in town. Elsewhere, I have read that a health insurance contract requires registration with the municipality and it can take weeks to finalize the contract.
This logic appears circular to me -- likely because I'm just too dense to appreciate the nuance nuance.

Can anyone explain the order of events here?

Thanks,
Dave

You don't need to have your health insurance organised before you register. You have up to 3 months after registering to sort out your health insurance cover. If you haven't done it by then and notified the gemeinde/commune then you risk being put on their default insurance policy which may cost more than you want to pay.

As for registering with the gemeinde/commune that has to be done within 14 days of your arrival.

You have 14 days after arrival to register with the commune Art. 10 VZAE https://www.admin.ch/opc/de/classifi...index.html#a10

You have 3 months after arrival to sort out health insurance. Art. 3 KVG https://www.admin.ch/opc/de/classifi.../index.html#a3
Insurance should be backdate to date of arrival. Also, you are covered from date of arrival if you take up health insurance within the mandated 3 months. You will have to show proof of insurance coverage before the end of the 3 month period or the commune will sort out a coverage for you.

It should not take much more than a week to get the mandatory basic health insurance coverage.

Thank you both. So what do you make of the online registration form here
https://www.gemeinde-pontresina.ch/o...amt/anmeldung/

It appears to instruct new arrivals to bring a copy of the health insurance policy when they register with the Gemeinde. One interpretation, I suppose, is that the Gemeinde is offering an additional service of processing residence permits for forwarding to the cantonal authority, and that the residence permit requires the health insurance contract. Anyone agree/disagree?

It is exactly as aSwissInTheUS said.

If you have to enter something in that field just place something like that you'll inform them when you have chosen an insurance and they have accepted you.

It just means if you found a way to get someone to offer you insurance already, let them know. Saves them the hassle of putting you into the pile of people they need to force their insurer of choice on to, and helps you avoid the problem of getting two sets of bills from different insurers.

They wouldn't register my daughter until she had health insurance last summer.

But she's Swiss, so maybe it's different.

Re: Sequencing: health insurance contract and registration w/ municipality

I've registered with 3 different communes, as in announced within 14 days..

None of them asked me about my insurance, ever, not even the first time.
I just checked again now, the online form to announce oneself as a new resident in our village and it's not even on the form.
My last move was just July, went to the commune, had a chat, got the local newsletter, filled in the new arrival form and done.

Is this just for up north? Doesn't seem to be a thing in these civilised FR speaking parts.
