What visa should I ask from my employer if I want to work in Geneva and live in Vaud?

Hello everyone,

I'm in the process of a job offer from an employer in Geneva.
I'm interested however in living in Vaud (Nyon) and commute to Geneva.

I'm not EU. What visa should I ask from my employer? Can they issue a visa for Vaud?

You're confused, so I suggest you do a little bit of digging here. A Visa is for a visitor to the country, but as you're intending to live and work here, what you'll be needing is not a visa, but a residence permit, and your prospective employer will be able to choose only between an L, for a limited, i.e. fixed-term, contract, or a B for a full-time employee position. Lots of threads explain the requirements for these, but it's up to the employer, not you, to make the appropriate application.

Where you live is not inherently linked to where you work, but just make sure you explain this to the employer so they can do what's needed in the first instance.

Your prospective employer has to apply for a permit for you. What you get may not be what they apply for since there are quota limits on permits for non-EU nationals. Most of the time non-EU's start with an L.

You in the meantime need to apply at the Swiss embassy/consulate in your country for a Type D visa which allows you to enter Switzerland for more than the 90 day tourist limit. If the permit is approved, the visa will be issued.

Sorry, I meant the work permit, my mistake.
I know that the permit will allow me to work and live in Geneva, however I'd like to like in Vaud and commute.
What should I ask from my employer to achieve this?

Just say ďI would like to live in Vaud, would you please request the appropriate documentationĒ? They know the rules here.

Your Geneva employer will have to have it processed in Vaud. The permis is for your place of residence, not employer's location. If they have a competent HR they should know that.

The work permit is associated the work location, i.e. the location of employer. Actually I am curious, whether you hold work permit issued in Geneva, and the residence card is in Lausanne?

No it is if your place of residence.

If you are not EU and don't have a C-permit, you have to live and work in the same canton unless you get special permission from BOTH cantons to do so.

I was never informed of that in either Geneva or Vaud (or they just donít care 🤷♂️) and itís not written on any formulaire. They always process my permit and lands in my postbox, but Iíll ask them the next time around to avoid any surprises.

Do you have the appropriate law article link?
