Happy Saturday all!

I’m involved in some expat forums throughout Switzerland, mainly on Facebook.

Lately, there has been a massive increase in people who have been saying “I want to move to Switzerland, I’m sure I can find a job” from the US and other outside EU countries. While I know there have always been those people out there, the most alarming part is that others on the forum advise them that it is easy and possible to do.

I of course immediately tell them it isn’t so easy and often send them to EF where they will get more information and perhaps the harsher truth.

As the problems of poorly ran governments, poverty etc. continue to increase around the world, I wonder if you have also noticed this increase in people thinking they can just simply move here because they want to. Aside from legitimate refugee situations, I find it rather arrogant, especially from The Americans.

Thanks!
If you have the right qualifications to come to Switzerland and find an employer that really wants your skills then it is a very straight forward process. A very good immigration policy in fact. Motivated immigrants with skills to offer is a good thing, the more the merrier I say!!

As soon as CH signs the EU agreement then they can start sending thousands of refugees here. They want that here for cheap labour

Refugees aren't allowed to work.
Yes, they are. They have a hard time finding a job thought because a) loads of people think exactly that: That they are not allowed and b) those who know better don't want to bother with the paper-work.

The Gemeinde with the highest number of Rumantsch speakers is actually Zürich.
But most of them "Wochenaufenthalter" I guess. They don't want to give up their number plates and the sunny week-ends. Who blames them

The CHF has strengthened nearly 100% v £ in 20 years almost as much v $ in 25 years, & under 25% inflation in that time. Clearly new hire salaries have to be significantly lower than 25 years ago. Supply & Demand with demand being the ability to pay, not a lot to discuss.
I think OP did not really want to discuss the business logic behind it, though you are completely right, imho.

I am not sure, Susie. It seems that maybe entitlement is behind it. And a sense of adventure? Miserable health care system in the US? Area with poor infrastructure and schools? Hysterical and overly polarized politics?

Completely agree with the "miserable health care system in the US". I think the only ones who benefitted from Obamacare, were those with pre-existing conditions (which I fully support) and insurance companies and hospitals. It is a cat and mouse game now. 6 years ago, I had to go on the "Open Market" for my daughter who took a leave of absence from her college/uni. That same plan I enrolled her on 6 years ago is now 3x the price and - even more staggering -the coverage/benefits are less! Unbelievable on all levels! Something has to change in the US regarding healthcare. It is unsustainable in my view... Ughh!

Re: Growing trend of people who think they can just move here.

Also forgot to mention, that 6 years ago my daughter had a choice of insurance providers but now, she has only one choice in Pennsylvania in the county where she resides. Something is really amiss with the US medical system for my daughter to have only one option for coverage. What rhymes with "monopoly"? And who benefits? Geez... Go figure the Insurance companies!

So hospitals inflate their charges to get the "maximum" from insurance companies and who is left adrift? Those who do not have coverage or cannot afford "proper" albeit - inflated/overpriced coverage.

The US needs medical/insurance reform badly! I would love to retire in Switzerland were it not for our children and extended family back in the US. I for one, really appreciate how efficient the Swiss medical system is.

Enough of my rant...lol

I'm also fascinated by this. Another bugbear is the "hi, I fluent English, any job for me, contact myself with message directly" posts in the Facebook groups for expats. Umm, how about no?

Re: Growing trend of people who think they can just move here.

Lived in several different EU countries... I found it the easiest country to move legally speaking,

The funniest part is because Greece of all places was super strict. I think like some others have said Switzerland IS a very easy straightforward country to move to. There's almost no language barrier because they have 4 different official languages plus a good command of English. On an immigration front, Switzerland does it right and time effective. Multiple pages and forums like this exist for people who haven't got a clue to quickly find one.

Isn't this a bit rich coming from someone who came here without a job and spent the first few months complaining incessantly?

You have zero reason to begrudge or criticise anyone else their dream of moving to Switzerland, it constantly ranks as the top place in the world to live and this thread is another cringeworthy example of how your mind works.

Re: Growing trend of people who think they can just move here.

Every year 24,000 Swiss citizens move to Switzerland from abroad. Thinking of second-generation Swiss who arrived from South America at times of crisis there, many of these would have had problems similar to those having, in addition, a visa hurdle. But at least they are entitled to public assistance.

Wow! You’ve got a long memory if you can remember her posts from Way back when she first arrived here.

I can see where she is coming from, expat Facebook groups are full of people who think they can just rock up here and get a job which is not how in works for most people.

No problem, let people try. Worst thing can happen is that they have to leave when they run out of savings......which is not that different to vacations

I think I'd respectfully disagree, if you uproot say a partner or a whole family, the consequences aren't identical.

No problem might not really cut it.
