Growing trend of people who think they can just move here.

Happy Saturday all!

I’m involved in some expat forums throughout Switzerland, mainly on Facebook.

Lately, there has been a massive increase in people who have been saying “I want to move to Switzerland, I’m sure I can find a job” from the US and other outside EU countries. While I know there have always been those people out there, the most alarming part is that others on the forum advise them that it is easy and possible to do.

I of course immediately tell them it isn’t so easy and often send them to EF where they will get more information and perhaps the harsher truth.

As the problems of poorly ran governments, poverty etc. continue to increase around the world, I wonder if you have also noticed this increase in people thinking they can just simply move here because they want to. Aside from legitimate refugee situations, I find it rather arrogant, especially from The Americans.

Thanks!

Re: Growing trend of people who think they can just move here.

Few people understand immigration regulations, especially their own country's.

If I had a nickel for every American who thought he could just up sticks and move to another country 'because everyone moves here, so why can't I go there?'... Of course that isn't the reality, immigration to the US is highly restricted - but try telling that to the average American, red hat wearing or not.

It's not until you are well into the process that the reality of how difficult immigration actually is - anywhere - starts to sink in.

---

That said, in OH's industry the bodyshops are still bringing waves of non-EU folks into Switzerland. (While the client company fires more expensive Swiss employees, but that's a whole 'nuther discussion.) The Swiss press is full of stories of skill shortages. (A cynic might say shortages at the price that employers are willing to pay today - again another discussion.)

It's not surprising that third country folks hear such stories and are encouraged to try to make the move themselves.

The CHF has strengthened nearly 100% v £ in 20 years almost as much v $ in 25 years, & under 25% inflation in that time. Clearly new hire salaries have to be significantly lower than 25 years ago. Supply & Demand with demand being the ability to pay, not a lot to discuss.

No, I don't find this particularly arrogant. Just very naive or unrealistic.

What happened with the "Right to pursue happiness"?

Everyone will hit the wall sooner or later and realise things are very complicated. I think many people, EFers included, just want to buffer the depressing reality and the disappointments. Also, in some cases these crazy plans actually might function. In 1% cases if you like...

Re: Growing trend of people who think they can just move here.

I'm in full agreement. There are far too many foreigners here.

I think we should take the lead of Emmett Watson, a columnist for the Seattle Times, who complained that Seattle, Washington was being overrun by newcommers and decided to do something about it. He founded the KBO group (Keep the Bastards Out). This was effectively an information campaign aimed at presenting invented negative aspects of Seattle, to make it appear an unattractive place to live.

If we were to do the same in Switzerland we could start with stories about not being permitted to flush the toilet after 10pm, people being so ignorant that they cannot name the president (of the Bundesrat), impossible to find brown sugar, very restricted employee protection rights etc. etc.

This isn’t about foreigners in Switzerland, it’s more about how many foreigners think they can just easily move here without a job, relationship ef..
