Question on Romanian passport eligibility

Hello,

I am a national of a non EU/EFTA state, currently in Switzerland on a B permit as a postdoc at EPFL. We would like to stay in Switzerland and I am looking for potential future jobs, after I finish my postdoc (which is quite flexible and up to me). Some employers say it would have been easier to issue a permit if I was an EU/EFTA national. Others say they can issue a permit for me as I am highly skilled in my area of expertise (PhD in Computer Science) and it is not a problem.

Aparently, my wife, which has Romanian roots, is eligible to apply for Romanian citizenship. I have read in several posts here that Romania is under quotas, but these posts were old and I am not sure this is still the case, or what it even means. In this link it says that "Currently the same conditions apply to all citizens of member states of the EU-27/EFTA, i.e. citizens of the EU-25/EFTA (EU-17/EFTA plus EU-8) and citizens of Bulgaria and Romania (EU-2)."

So my question is:
1. Does it worth for us to pursue Romanian citizenship in order to stay in Switzerland? Will it actually help us get permits after I am done with my postdoc position?
2. If we get a Romanian passport, will it have any implication on a future application for C permit? Or on future naturalization process, if we get there?

Thank you!

Re: Question on Romanian passport eligibility

Without knowing your wifeís history itís hard to say, but I had a quick look and it looks like Romanian citizenship is always passed down, regardless of whether you live in the country or not. So she is probably already Romanian??

However, for you it doesnít help, for a spouse of a Romanian to become Romanian, you have to have lived there for 5 years.

So the only way it helps, is if she were as an EU citizen, to get a permit based on her job here, then she could apply for you to have a permit as her dependant. That then would give you EU working rights.

Re: Question on Romanian passport eligibility

Romanians were under a quota system for permits until recently, but now have full freedom of movement.

However, the problem with that idea is if your wife got/has the citizenship then she would need to have a job here to be the main permit holder and you would have to be her dependent under family reunification.

If for any reason the marriage breaks down and you divorce then you would lose your right to a permit and any employer would have to apply for a new one under the non-EU hiring criteria.

There are no implications regarding C permits or citizenship. You still have to meet the criteria for those whether you're EU or non-EU.
