Permit problem when changing cantons and going down to part-time?

Hi everyone!

I have a B-permit issued by Geneva since 5 years. I am considering moving to a new job in Zurich. It is only part-time (40-60%). I got married to a non-EU citizen 3 years ago, and she has a B-permit through family reunification, as well as a full time job as a PHD, working in Bern.

1. Will a new B-permit from Zurich be guaranteed?

2. Is there an income level we must meet as a couple?

3. Can I get a C-permit as soon as my German is good enough, or is the 5-year waiting time reset when switching cantons?

4. How do part-time contracts work in Switzerland? Can they cut your hours as they please, or do they have to give you the hours rather than hiring someone new?

5. Are there any other downsides of part-time employment to consider?

Thanks!

Iíve known people be refused permits with contracts less than 50%. I would also think, as your wife is here as your dependant, that your salary will have to be enough to support you both.... not 100% sure but expect hers wonít count in that respect!

Re: Permit problem when changing cantons and going down to part-time?

I talked to the immigration office in Geneva, and they referred me to the Zurich office. After a phone call with them, I found out the following:

1. Will a new B-permit from Zurich be guaranteed?

Yes, as any job offer is pretty much a reason to grant a B-permit to an EU citizen.

2. Is there an income level we must meet as a couple?

There is no set amount required, but they will check that we can cover our bills as a couple (counting both our incomes).

3. Can I get a C-permit as soon as my German is good enough, or is the 5-year waiting time reset when switching cantons?

Yes, the 5-year waiting period carries over to other cantons, so I can apply for it as soon as my German is good enough.

In other words, it looks very promising!

I'm very impressed with the efficiency of the immigration bureaucracy here. They seem to have very reasonable rules, and it often ends up being much easier than expected to get official approval for visas and permits.
