Permit B and unemployed: found a job in UK, can I hold my permit during trial period?

Hi everyone,

I'm an EU citizen (permit B) subscribed to RAV who has been offered a permanent job in the UK, which I would like to accept. Rules normally imply that you should inform your personal RAV advisor as soon as you've found a new job.

As far as I know, accepting a job abroad also implies leaving Switzerland, giving up the permit. This is done by communicating it to the municipality.

Now, the problem is that the job includes a trial period, after which the company will decide wether to confirm me or not. In case I'll not be confirmed I'll find myself unemployed in the UK, with no right to come back to Switzerland with my old permit.

Does anybody have an idea on how to solve this?

I thought one option would be to unsubscribe from RAV first, and then sign the contract and go to the UK, so that I could still hold my residence permit and in the worst case come back.

Aother option would be to let my personal advisor know I've found a Job, but not telling my municipality that I'm leaving (this might work only if the RAV doesn't communicate with the municipality).

What do you guys think? Thanks a lot in advance!

When I signed off at RAV for a job abroad (France) they told me that I could return to RAV if it doesn’t work out with the new Job (within the time frame rav would have paid me).

But I was on permit C and I still had approx 8 month rav time left

As far as I know, you can officially put your b permit on hold for a limited time when you leave (6 Month?).

AFAIK B permits cannot be put on hold, and C permits may only be put on hold for specific reasons, such as study abroad or being sent abroad by your employer.

If OP is EU, s/he can simply de-register and re-register when s/he comes back.

I've been to the migration office and they told me that as a permit B holder, if I find a job abroad I have to go to the municipality and deregister, therefore giving up the permit. So, no chances apparently to put it on hold

I know I could simply de-register and re-register, but it would be a pity to give up my current permit, which is still valid for 3 years, and after which I could apply for a C permit.

Plus, if I had to decide to come back to switzerland I would have to find a job with a permanent contract first (or for more than 1 year) in order to get a B permit. I know I could also apply for a temporary L permit (valid 6 months) but it's just not the same. I'm also not entitled to ask for a "permit without a gainful employment", as I might not have adequate financial resources.

That's a pretty tricky situation, I know...
