Moving to Vevey from Düsseldorf, Germany - question about dependants

Hello everyone!

We are a couple of teaching professionals moving to Vevey for work in August. We are British Citizens and EU members for now...

I have been trying work out what would be easier for us to move as a couple. We are engaged and planned to get married next year, but only I have a contract for work secured so far. Would getting married ahead of moving make it easier to live together in Switzerland? I have read that we would need proof of adequate income for us both, but I can't find any hard numbers about that income and what we would need to secure her a visa.

An alternative is for my partner to either retrain or look for other work. How long would she be able to remain in the country while looking for work?

Thank you in advance for any advise!

Re: Moving to Vevey from Düsseldorf, Germany - question about dependants

Welcome to the forum.

There are several possibilities.

Marriage is probably the easiest. There are no hard and fast figures since varies from canton to canton and probably from commune to commune; more expensive locations would need a higher salary than lower ones.

Providing you can meet the critiera your wife would get a family reunification permit allowing her to reside in Switzerland. If/when she finds a job then she just needs to let the commune know she's now employed and the permit will be changed to include employment.

If you want to wait until next year to marry you could try applying for a fiance permit. This is for those couples planning to marry here; it gives a few months time for her to be here to help with the wedding preprations. Another possibility is the concubine permit for unmarried hetreosexual couples. For this you'd need to agree to be financially responsible her for 5 years. Not all cantons offer this one so you'd need to check whether it would be possible. Once married you should be able to switch this to a family reunification one.

Lastly her finding work herself. Depending on what she teaches and whether she has proficiency in a Swiss language international schools might be the only option. As an EU national she can be here for up to 3 months as a tourist to look for work. If she doesn't find a job in that timeframe then she can apply for an L job seeker permit for another 3 months providing she has the funds to support herself. If no job or not married by then she would have to leave the country unless you could get one of the other types of permit.

The UK left the EU 31 January 2020. You need to refer to the UK-Swiss agreement https://www.gov.uk/government/news/s...ghts-agreement .
