Changing cantons with L permit

Hello,

I live in the canton of Vaud and my girlfriend lives in Geneva. We want to move in together in Vaud in an apartment I am already living in. Both of us are on L permits.

As far as I know you can't change cantons of residence without official approval on an L permit. And also you need to report address changes to the government which will require a change to the rental contract. All this is hassle and paperwork.

How bad can such a residence switch be with respect to time, money and paperwork? Where can I learn about the steps to take?

Are there other options that will not involve the friction with the government? I was thinking that worst case scenario, she can keep the flat she's renting in Geneva and legally be registered there while living with me in Vaud. If we go with this option, a good idea would be to find something super cheep in Geneva, any ideas?

We don't have much time for the hassle with the government since she's on an internship here and is leaving in a couple of months. So the options where we will have to spend some extra money to make it work faster are preferred to the slower, official options.

Thanks.

Re: Changing cantons with L permit

There are no other options.

"Art. 37 Change of the place of residence to another canton

1 Persons with a short stay permit or a residence permit who would like to relocate their place of residence to another canton must apply for the appropriate permit from the new canton beforehand."

https://www.admin.ch/opc/en/classifi...232/index.html

But her living with you is a no, no, sorry. She can't just move in with you since you'd have to inform your landlord/agency and they in turn inform the commune that someone else is living there. So she'd be expected to register there.

Frankly for a couple of months I'd just visit back and forth between the two places as much as you can.

Re: Changing cantons with L permit

She already stays at my place every weekend, so she can just extend her stays to workdays while keeping her flat and permit from Geneva. I don't need to inform the landlord or agency about that, and we can call it "visiting each other as frequently as possible". What can go wrong?

If she’s an EU citizen, she can just take her work contract and apply for a new permit in Vaud. Should t be an issue.

She's not an EU citizen though, she's from China.

Sorry, but yes you do. Weekend visits are temporary, you're talking permanent even if it is just for a few months. And you want to know what can go wrong? Neighbours.

But if you want to risk it then go ahead. If it causes problems with your right to stay here and possibly even future chances to enter the Schengen Area then don't say you weren't warned.

This isn't even a long distance relationship so just accept the constraints you're under and make the most of it for the next couple of months.

Re: Changing cantons with L permit

We did it for four years, albeit in the same canton.

My place in Regensdorf Sunday-Friday, her place in Zurich Friday and Saturday.

This works provided the owner of the place you rent doesn't care about undeclared inhabitants. The owner and neighbors care because the water and heating costs depend on the number of people living there. You only need a nosy neighbor to be in problems.

Finding super cheap room in Geneva is.....a dream.

As st2lemans replied, living in different places works. Geneva-Lausanne is 40 min by train. Consider for a min that people in relationships living in the same city sometimes are farther away.

Nothing gets done in a couple of months. Not in this country.
