Applying for permit for unmarried partner in SG

Hello everyone

I am about to move to the St. Gallen canton from the UK, due to arrive on the 28th March for a new job which I am very excited about. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on permit applications, as I am moving with my partner, but we are not married (but have been together for almost 10 years).

My salary will easily cover us both, and I read about a concubine permit but I dont think SG do that one? I assumed that she should apply for an L permit, but is there any way to tie our applications together to demonstrate that she will be my dependent financially? We have also both signed the new rental contract for a flat if that helps.

The whole thing is very confusing so if anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated. My new company is helping but is somewhat preoccupied by Covid-19 (which is also a concern for us, but I thought that if I had residency paperwork in order then I would still be allowed across the border in the event of restrictions.)

Re: Applying for permit for unmarried partner in SG

Welcome to the forum.

Sorry, but no. If the concubine permit isn't available in St Gallen then she'd have to qualify for a permit herself; she wouldn't fall under family reunification since you're not married.

Assuming she's English she can be here for up to 3 months as a tourist to look for work. If she doesn't find a job in that timeframe she can ask for an L job seeker permit for another 3 months. If she doesn't find a job in that period then she must leave the country.

Ok thanks for the info. Is it possible to apply for an L permit now, as in the next few weeks, tourists may not be allowed across the border?

Re: Applying for permit for unmarried partner in SG

No, they will not give them to EU/EFTA nationals before they've been here for 3 months.

Easiest way out of the problem - marry asap or plan to do so soon after you arrive if it's still possible with all this virus chaos. The Swiss don't see you as a couple since you're not married, but tend to look at you as individuals. The concubine permit is their way around that, but not all cantons issue it so you're not recognised as a couple in any way.

She could then get a fiancée permit which is valid for a few months until the wedding happens. You probably need to have a definite date for that in mind and have started preparations for it. After the wedding she'd get a family reunification permit.
