Permit B - living in a different canton?

Hi,

Can I hold a permit B (I am not a Swiss/EU/EFTA national) from Vaud and live in canton Zurich?

I am asking because I am in the process of moving from being a postdoctorant at EPFL to working for a company in Zurich. I have a B permit from EPFL. The company in Zurich is applying for a permit for me with the Zurich migration office and I will start there once the permit is approved. However, this may take some time due to the coronavirus situation (the migration office assured me that they are issuing permits though).

The problem is that we want to move to Zurich area in the summer, regardless of my employment situation, since my son goes to school and we also need to vacate our current apartment.

So we don't know whether it is ok that we rent an apartment in Zurich starting the summer, and move into it even if we do not have the new permits yet. Our old permits from Vaud will remain valid until I switch employers.

I asked the Zurich migration office and they did not know the answer. Referred me to the Vaud migration office which I was unable to talk to so far.

Anyone here knows the rules or has related experience?

Thanks,
Yotam

Since your permit is tied to your employer I'm afraid you're just going to have to wait until the coronavirus/permit situation is sorted out.

Re: Permit B - living in a different canton?

It seems like there is no issue with the permit and the coronavirus. Maybe just a slight delay. It just takes some time and will not necessarily be aligned with our rental contract dates and/or our preferences on when to move. The question is whether we are allowed to move to live in another canton given our current permits.

A slight delay? Where did you hear that?

As a non EU you need to have approval from both Kantons before you move and I doubt in the current situation that there will only be a slight delay.

And no, do not move before you have the job sorted out as the Kanton move can be denied.

Re: Permit B - living in a different canton?

I didn’t know there is a process of approval of the move between cantons. Can you please elaborate on it? I wrote “slight delay” as this is what I have been told by the Zurich migration office over the phone. I did not know that the Vaud authorities also have something to do with it.

This is really bad news for us... thanks.

Re: Permit B - living in a different canton?

That is in most Kantons. You need to have approval to move there before you move.

My advice is wait until you get your work permit. With this coronavirus situation, some companies stopped hiring and termination is not rare.
