Non EU Citizenship for children

hello all...

This topic is not new in the forum but since the rules have changed recently hence asking this a fresh

1. What are the rules for citizenship for non EU family? From forum I read minimum 10 years stay in Swiss , but kids are counted double between 8 to 18 yrs... Is there a min age for children to apply for citizenship on their own? I was told 14 yrs, not sure if this is true.. (ofcourse considering the family has C permit). Any website on these rules/criteria? for Zurich canton

2. Any experience from you applying or getting citizenship for your children , such as how long it took (in Zurich canton), I also learnt mandatory military service here

Re: Non EU Citizenship for children

Rules vary depending on the Canton, and they changed recently as well in Canton Zurich.

You can look up the info here, for your specific location:

https://www.ch.ch/en/regular-natural...-requirements/

For the teenagers, it was very easy in our town. They were very welcoming and my husband, who speaks better German and Swiss-German, handled it with our teenagers.

The interview was very straightforward and because my husband had already done all the prep and met with the staff a few times to ask some questions, they even offered to speak to me in English during the interview if needed- it wasn't me being interviewed, it was the kids.

The 'interview' was just a 'getting to know you' kind of chat - asking the kids what they felt was different about Switzerland and their home country ,where they went to school and what they were thinking of doing for study or work in the future.

It's a simplified system for the kids 10-16 and also much cheaper. But both my kids did their applications before the rules changed in December 2017...

Found this link about the changes:

EU or Non-EU, the rules are the very same.
Children do not have to do military service.

Good site.. thank you

Few questions still not clear are
1. As child becomes adult - military service comes in? no much info on this anywhere
2. if the children meet the 10 year stay in Switzerland criteria (considering the double counting between 8-18 years) - can the children apply for citizenship alone without Parents?
There no mention of min age for child to apply though,...

1. If the child is male, yes then military service is mandatory. In lieu of that, he can do civil service or pay a fee equivalent to 3% (? I think that's the amount) of annual salary.

2. The minimum age is the age at which the child meets all the requirements (C permit and 10 years residence)

Sure. Like any other adult male Swiss in the conscription age. It is voluntarily for woman.

Two of my children are Swiss, yet none of the rest of us are ... so yes, children can apply for Swiss citizenship without either parent being Swiss (or even having a C permit - the first one became Swiss before the rest of us were eligible for a C, we were still on Bs).

Re: Non EU Citizenship for children

The C Permit was made mandatory since 2018 I guess..... This is also mentioned into other URL shared on this thread.

However what is not clear is - Is there a min age for for child to apply on his own?

The rules are the same for for EU as well as non-EU.

The law does not mention or specify an explicit minimum age. As long as the residency, integration and permit requirements are fulfilled and all persons holding rights of custody give their o.k. an independent application is possible.

For independent applications of minors see also Chapter 3, section 321/42 of the Citicenhip Handbook. http://www.sem.admin.ch/sem/de/home/...rgerrecht.html

Re: Non EU Citizenship for children

pretty much on the target ... awesome help,Just one correction that the section is 311/42

By the way there is mention of Art. 31 in the document.. but this article is not detailed in the same document..

ie, if they are still a minor when applying (Art. 31 Para. 1 BüG)

but where is Art 31?
