Canton of residency--how is it controlled?

As I have just completed and reported my change of address for an inter-cantonal move, I wonder how the authorities control it and if people are not trying to abuse the system for tax "optimization" when moving out from a canton with lower taxes to a canton with higher taxes, but not reporting it and continuing to pay the lower taxes of their former canton?

For example, location of the childrens' school is an easy one to determine primary residence.

Well, you normally rent and the address is shared with the authorities. If you move out, somebody else moves in to your former address and reports this, so the question arises, what happened to the guy who was there previously?

Of course one could try to make some sort of agreement with the person who moves in after you, to claim that you still live there/rent a room, but these are dangerous waters and it is not worth gaining a few hundred bucks per month, at best.

You have, by Law, to register with the new Commune/Gemeinde where you have moved. If you don't, it will soon be noticed- for sure. The Commune/Gemeinde have the right to discuss this with landlord and utility companies, etc. Curtain twitchers will certainly know.

You might get away with it for a month or two, but not indefinitely. Landlords, I was one once, are expected to announce tenants arrivals and their permit/commune d’origine information as a matter of course.

Unless you were living in a room with a willing accomplice it might take longer. The post office will soon notice, unless you shut that door too.

There are persons sans papiers in our communities, but they really have to work hard at it.
