Moving from an Expat contract to a local contract

I have been in Switzerland for 4 year on an expat contract with a US company. We are now talking about moving me to a local contract. How long can you stay in Switzerland on a B permit on an Expat agreement before you need to move to a local agreement? I have been told its 5 years but am not sure if this is the case. I am a US and Australian citizen

Re: Moving from an Expat contract to a local contract

Way back when, it was 5 years in Kt ZH.

And just to be clear, by expat contract are you talking about an arrangement with the canton where you pay US Soc Sec rather than AHV, and have non-Swiss global health insurance (such as BUPA or Cigna) provided by the company rather than Swiss insurance?

These were the factors that concerned the canton.

Other bits and pieces of an expat contract - salary paid in home country currency, COLA (including housing allowance) referenced to your home location, tax gross-up, tax prep, and any other perks are likely a company policy issue. 5 years still seems to be the usual for these, but could depend on how badly the local office still needs you and your negotiation skills going forward. Some companies use a step-down of expat benefits, some within the 5 years, some extending beyond.

In short - talk to your company.

The US-Swiss social security totalization agreement allows a US employee posted to Switzerland to remain on US social security for up to five years. After that, the US employee needs to transfer to Swiss AHV:
