Ideas on getting US birth certificate?

I need an original of my US birth certificate rather urgently - I applied for one in March from the US, which they said has been mailed from the US, but alas with COVID, it's now May and it has not shown up (??). I used the official site for my state.

Does anyone know of a way to obtain this in Switzerland / EU - do embassies issue these perhaps?

Re: Ideas on getting US birth certificate?

I am not aware of US embassies procuring original copies of birth certificates. When I had to obtain one, had to go to the state I was born to have it ordered - they had a rush service available but all of this varies from state to state. In my case, it was the county clerk's office

At least it can be done on state level, and there is no need to go down to county or town level.

@OP: If you ordered it from the state you might order it from county/commune (and vice versa). Draw back might be, that you can get an apostille directly on the birth certificate when ordered from the state vital records office, whereas you would have to send it back to the Secretary of State (or what ever the competent authority is in the particular state https://www.hcch.net/en/states/autho...ails3/?aid=353) if ordered from county/commune which adds an extra round trip.

If the vital records office are still open to the public you might also use the help of a private company.

Re: Ideas on getting US birth certificate?

Go back to the state records office and ask them to send it by FedEx, et al. That will cost you, but it will expedite it.

Also, when it comes time to vote remember who is trying to kill the USPS

Re: Ideas on getting US birth certificate?

I know that Post from Switzerland to the US is extremely slow right now due to there being so many less international flights than usual, due to the virus; and I assume it's the same for flights from the US to CH.

There is at least one site where you can order a copy of your birth certificate online:

https://www.vitalrecordsonline.com/b...B&gclsrc=aw.ds

There is also this site, from which I think you can order a copy. (Both sites say they will be sent very quickly):

https://www.usbirthcertificate.net/

Good luck.

Re: Ideas on getting US birth certificate?

We had to get a US birth certificate for one of my children with an Apostille on it. California that issued it would not issue the Apostille unless one of the parents was present. There was no way around it and it was very frustrating. The need for the birth certificate with Apostille was so critical for our visa to move to another EU country that my husband had to fly out from Switzerland. Landed and was in Los Angeles for a day to get the apostille birth certificate and hop back on a plane. It was the craziest thing we ever had to do for paperwork.

If you just need a regular birth certificate I recommend going through a third party website like Vital Check as they can speed up the process for a fee depending on which state you need the certificate from. Good luck!

Re: Ideas on getting US birth certificate?

A quick update: apparently fedex is having problems getting stuff out of the country now and the certificate was returned to the issuing office after several weeks (I am now 4 months into when I first ordered, took them 2 months to process the order and mail it!). So, although flying to LA seems like a crazy idea, if you really, really need it...

Wait, what?
Something to this extend is not even mentioned on the relevant home website:
https://www.sos.ca.gov/notary/apostille-faqs/
How could you even know such thing w/o wasting time for sending in the birth certificate just to be denied an apostille Holy Permit A 38 multiplied by imaginations of Kafka.

I have no idea. This was back in 2013. Maybe rules have changed but there was no budging for the Apostille back then.

Well, I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope with the second if you've not lived in the States for a while. I checked my old State and it says this

"Additional Requirements:
Driver’s license or your state issued identification card is required. (If unavailable, follow rules below.)

Note: We don’t accept orders using non-US issued credit cards or ship outside the USA.

Rules for an adult who doesn’t have an ID and was born in a state that requires ID:

The parent listed on the birth certificate must request the birth certificate for an adult that doesn’t have ID and was born in a state that requires it."

https://www.usbirthcertificate.net/b...cate/oklahoma/

I didn't go through the whole process on the first link, but I wouldn't be surprised to find they won't ship outside the US either or accept non-US credit cards.

When I half looked at getting a certified copy of my birth certificate a few years ago, the only way to do it was to go there in person. Good thing I didn't actually need one!
