Do I really need to renew my UK-Passport right now?

My passport is expiring soon and I was on the UK website to renew and it asks you about five times if you REALLY need to renew your passport right now. Wait times are long because of Coronavirus and they want to prioritize people who really need a new passport.

I live in Switzerland, obviously not planning to travel soon, how much of a problem is it to have an expired British passport? I have a C-permit.

You need a passport to live here if you are not Swiss.

Most people in uk do not need to renew urgently, unless travelling.

You’re one of the cases they want to have free capacity for...

How much of a problem? None at all. It's more theoretical than anything else, if you have a C permit then you're very unlikely ever to be asked for your passport.

Should you get it done straight away? Yes, absolutely. Regardless of the likelihood of it being a problem, you do, theoretically, need it, unlike most UK dwellers, so you should go right ahead.

If your C is up for renewal soon, then you have to provide a copy of valid passport in Zug - may be the same for Zurich

Actually no Even the old law on foreigners (ANAG, replaced by AuG in 2004) said that having valid papers from the home country is only generally a prerequisite for staying in Switzerland (see Art. 6). Cantons used to require a security deposit from people with valid permits but no valid travel papers.

The current AIG law doesn't even say that. Obviously OP shouldn't travel internationally without a passport but they'll have no problem whatsoever staying in Switzerland with a C permit and a (recently) expired passport. FWIW I have a non-EU friend who applied for a C permit with a recently expired passport back in 2015 and received it without any problems (their country is very slow to issue new passports to citizens abroad). The authorities would be even more lenient in the current crisis.

The number of situations where a C permit wouldn't work as an ID in CH and one absolutely must bring a valid national passport is very limited (I can only think of applying for Swiss citizenship or getting married at the moment). Just going on with your life should be fine.

Also, there are people living in CH who just cannot renew their passports because their home country is at war or otherwise dysfunctional. Those in this situation with C permits actually have a right get an "alien passport" from Switzerland (Art. 59.2.c AIG) and it would work as an international travel document.

While you might not be planning to travel now, if you have close family in another country you should always have a current passport just in case of any emergency

Re: Do I really need to renew my UK-Passport right now?

Before I got a Red passport my commune would always ask me for a copy of my new passport around the time my old one expired. They, obviously, recorded it’s expiry date and knew when I was about to become sans-papiers.

But in the circumstances I am sure they would wait, for a reasonable amount of time.

Absolutely this, we never know when we would be forced to travel.

Re: Do I really need to renew my UK-Passport right now?

Thanks for all of the answers. I went ahead and applied for the renewal.

I have to send in the old UK passport before they send me the new one, but luckily I have another non-Swiss passport, so I'm covered if I need to travel for an emergency.

I'll update with how long it takes and when/if Swiss authorities need a copy of the new UK passport in case anyone else finds themselves in the same situation.

I was told they need a copy as soon as you have a new passport. Got a letter from the Gemeinde on that as I forgot to do that

We have never ever been asked for a copy of our passports in all the years we’ve lived here.

Re: Do I really need to renew my UK-Passport right now?

A friend of mine found it much harder in terms of paperwork, etc. to reapply after the passport expired than it would have been to just renew. Reapplying meant getting another copy of the birth certificate, an apostilled translation of the marriage certificate, etc.

WRONG. May be it is time to read the actual law you quote. The clause that a foreigner needs a valid ID/Passport during the stay in Switzerland is given in Art. 89 FNIA https://www.admin.ch/opc/en/classifi...index.html#a89

For some nationalities an expired passport is still valid.

Guilty as charged, thanks for catching me
Presuming I haven't actually read the AIG was cute though. I guess my memory wasn't perfect, duh.

All right, let's read the AIG together! Art. 89 you referred to says that a foreigner must possess a valid and recognized identity paper throughout their stay conforming to Art 13.1 AIG. So let's look at Art 13.1:
Quote:
Ausländerinnen und Ausländer müssen bei der Anmeldung ein gültiges Ausweispapier vorlegen. Der Bundesrat bestimmt die Ausnahmen und die anerkannten Ausweispapiere.
The regulation where those exceptions and recognized documents is specified is called VZAE. The VZAE article relevant to Art 13.1 AIG is Art. 8.

Quote:
Als Ausweispapiere werden für die Anmeldung anerkannt:

a.
Ausweisschriften der von der Schweiz anerkannten Staaten, sofern sie die Identität der Ausländerin oder des Ausländers und die Zugehörigkeit zum ausstellenden Staat belegen und die Inhaberin oder der Inhaber damit jederzeit in diesen Staat einreisen kann;
b.
andere Ausweise, die Gewähr dafür bieten, dass die Inhaberin oder der Inhaber damit jederzeit zur Einreise in den ausstellenden Staat oder in das im Ausweis bezeichnete Gebiet berechtigt ist;
c.
The papers allowed by (c) form a very broad spectrum. I believe e.g. a citizenship certificate (for countries that issue them), a paper confirming you've applied for a replacement passport at your consulate or a paper confirming your citizenship issued by the consulate would all work.

So yes, it's not advisable to stay in CH without a valid national travel document for a long time but it's not like you're automatically breaking Art. 89 AIG the second it expires.

I tried to post the passport renewal application and the lady at the post office told me I can’t send international registered post due to Covid-19. So I guess the OP has to wait until the border opens to post their passport renewal application.

A couple of years ago I actually lost my C permit. It's something that can happen as it's always in my pocket as opposed to my passport which is safely at home.

Of course it's always in an inside pocket and safely stowed so it can't just fall out. But one day it must have done that. I retraced my steps and went to all the places that i had used it in recently, such as for collecting parcels at the post office. But nobody had seen it.

I asked at the Kreisbüro about getting a replacement, and they said not until I have a police statement about the loss. So I went to the police station and of course that's when I was very happy to have a passport to save myself further embarrasment. The police officer who helped me told me not to worry as this sort of thing happens all the time.

Unlikely, I know, but can happen.

Registered international is possible. At destination the letter might be delivered w/o actual signature (like it is in Switzerland).

To the UK you can send letters and packages. Priority, Economy, and Urgent as well.

Re: Do I really need to renew my UK-Passport right now?

The Lovely Missus needs to renew her UK passport in the next few months, so did the application online on 3rd April.

She sent in the expiring passport by registered post. It took them over a week to confirm receipt, along with a note on 15th April to expect a long delay due to the passport office being on limited working due to covid 19 restrictions.

30th April they sent a further message saying "please don't contact us, we are working on it". On 15th May, the same email, repeated.

As of today, still no passport. So don't expect it in a hurry, even if you do manage to get your documents sent in.

Regards

Ian
