Applying for permit on the same day I am starting my job

Hi all - I was just informed that I do not need to wait for a Visa to work in Switzerland from HR as I am a EU citizen and happen to have a French passport, my wife and kids are British but she only will join me in a couple of months so I don't have to worry just yet about them.

As I will be separated from my family for a bit, I'd like to maximize my time with them. Arriving on Sunday the 14th of June and starting my job on the 15th of June would be ideal. It seems I need to register with the authorities BEFORE I start my new job - for those of you who have registered in Geneva, how long does it usually take to register with the administration? Is it feasible for me to register at 9AM and be at my desk in my new job around 11AM?

The HR function of my new employer is not in Geneva and they are not as aware as to what I need or do not need to start my job, instead of relying on them I figured I'd rely on the communal spirit of a forum! (I was just informed today that I can just go to work without applying ahead of time for a work Visa). Border will be open from the 8th of June so I apparently just need my contract to fly out from Heathrow

If you are at city-hall to register at 9:00 and need to work at 11:00 you even have time for a lunch in between.

You go to the Gemeinde and bring along rental contract, passport and labour contract that should be more than enough to have zero problems to register which should only take minutes.

(and bring a card to pay)

It’s perfectly feasible.
Just show up at the commune with all the necessary paperwork and it shouldn’t take more than about 10- 15 minutes.
We didn’t have to pay anything upfront, we paid once the permit was ready but these things vary widely from canton to canton.

In Geneva you actually register and send all the documents by post so no need to go anywhere

I'm in the same situation (also EU) but I think they are not giving permits until the 15th of June (except a few exceptions) so maybe it could be kind of optimistic to get the permit quickly if many people are also waiting for the 15th.

Re: Applying for permit on the same day I am starting my job

In Geneva, you need to submit the following form https://www.ge.ch/document/ocpm-form...r-etou-travail to:

Office cantonal de la population et des migrations
Service étrangers
Case postale 2652
1211 Genève 2

As soon as you submit the form with the requested attachments (for EU nationals it's just the photo) you can start working.

There is no point in going there physically - they only see people by appointment and only for visas, biometric data collection, passport and legalizations.

Hope this helps - a visit to that office can be cause of much frustration and you want to avoid it if you can. Things there do not get done in 10-15 minutes!

Is there an official announcement that it will be possible to cross the border and to ask for a permit after 15th June? I did not see anything here: https://www.sem.admin.ch/sem/en/home...weigerung.html
