Just got a letter inviting me to apply for Swiss citizenship... normal?

Hi guys. I just got a letter in the mail co-signed by the Stadtprasidantin and Stadtschreiberin of Stadt Zurich, inviting/recommending me to apply to become Swiss as I have been here and on a C permit for so long, telling me it will be great to be Swiss because I can get involved in the democracy etc etc. While it was addressed to me and signed, I am of course sure others in my situation have received the same letter.

I've never seen anyone mention getting these kinds of letters before, I only read how challenging it is for people to become Swiss and didn't think they actively sent people letters encouraging them to apply for citizenship. Is this a new initiative from Stadt Zurich or has it been going on for some time?

Being integrated means you have a bit of knowledge about local politics and issues.

At least since 2017 with opposition from you guessed whom: https://www.nzz.ch/zuerich/aktuell/e...sen-ld.1289791

It is much "simpler" in the cities as it is a streamlined process with less ambiguity.

Ahh thanks, I never saw this mentioned before! And yes of course, my knowledge of local politics is unparalleled... *cough*

I guess I should pull my finger out and do it asap while times are still good.

I think it is pretty recent, I had one about 3-6 months ago as well as a work-mate. Probably getting offended that someone has been here 18 years and hasn't tried

I like that gesture. I wonder if other countries do that too?

.
And "a bit" of knowledge of the Swiss history, geography, etc.

Also, having Swiss or local friends wouldn't be a bad thing either.

@Chuff

Wish you good luck with the process.

I've fulfilled the requirements for several years and never got a letter. It's funny in the sense that I don't feel the need to apply.. but my ego is bruised from not being asked !

Why should you get a letter from the President of Zurich?

I would write a letter to the president of Zürich banning her from making you a citizen without your permission. The impunity.

Considering the ancient quarrel between Basel and Zurich, this might take it to a new level?

As we say, I'm from Basel. I'm in Zurich canton to provide development aid.
