Entering together: EU spouse with job and non-EU spouse

Hiya,

I'm looking for help and clarification
Although I've read many posts about family re-unification, I still can't get what's the exact timeline of events when it comes to entering a Swiss canton.

Our situation is the following:
* EU spouse is trying to secure a job either in Zurich or Geneva (with a small bias towards Geneva because we don't speak a word of German).
* Non EU spouse, living and working in the EU for 3 years (Ireland, so outside of Schengen)

As far as I understood from the posts here, the EU citizen needs a visa and a work permit in order to settle in Switzerland. The non-EU citizen needs a visa and work permit which depend on the EU spouse having them and the canton allowing it.

My questions are:
1 - Can we enter the country *together*? Is it even possible?
2 - If so, what would be necessary so the 2 of us can legally enter and reside in Switzerland at the same time?
3 - Does it help to have a big enough apartment already rented?
4 - Does it help to have a hefty account in an appropriate bank?

I understand that some restrictions apply at the moment because of the pandemic and I have also read that some visas are taking very long to be processed (particularly in Geneva and Vaud). I totally understand things might be a tad different these days but if we are going to move there it will probably be after the summer.

Thank you very much in advance.

Welcome to the forum.

Your wife needs a Swiss employment contract. As an EU national she doesn't need a visa, but you will need a Type D visa to allow you to enter Switzerland for more than the 90 day tourist limit.

With an employment contract in hand and rental contract as well you should both be able to register as residents here.

Thank you very much Medea!

Please correct me if I'm understanding you wrong, but would that mean that I can apply for the Type D visa afterentering the country as a tourist?

Thanks once again.

No, you must apply at the embassy/consulate in Ireland for a Type D visa before you come here. The visa is only to allow you to enter Switzerland long term so applying for it after arrival is a bit back to front. Shouldn't be a problem to get one once your wife has a job/rental contract lined up.
