Sorry for another question and thanks to all the kind people who helped me with the last one.



Let's forget Covid-19 for this question and just talk about in normal times:


I have found contradictory information about getting married in Switzerland and was wondering if someone could clear this up: Can a Swiss person marry a non-EU foreigner who is visiting visa-free (in this case an American) if that person does not intend to stay in Switzerland beyond their visa free period? I found some things that say only one person needs to be a citizen/resident and others that say both people need to be citizens/residents.


All the information and stories I have found is for people who want to move to live with their spouse in Switzerland. My situation requires constant travel and foreign work so I can't stay long in Switzerland in the next few years so I don't need or want residency.


Just so you understand where I am coming from: it is super easy to get married in the US if you are from Europe and do not intend to stay. You can arrive on a visa-waiver marry and then leave before your entry time is over (of course if you intend to stay it is a long visa process).

Must be possible, because I’ve known of situations where 2 non-residents have married in Switzerland, holiday type wedding.

I can't imagine why not.... My Aussie friend (resident) married his Serbian partner (non resident) here in Zurich.

I'm Brit so slightly different and married my Swiss husband here when both of us lived in the UK and (at the time) had no intention of living here......

We were both non-Swiss residents who decided to get married in the UK because of the The Bureaucracy here.

My late (Swiss) wife and I got married in the US no problem, far easier than here (unless you are both Swiss). We were both Swiss residents at the time.

Second wife I married here, but we are both Swiss so it was very easy.

Just go to Vegas. No fancy paperwork required to get married, no visas needed. Then she files the paperwork to register your marriage here in Switzerland.

Just make sure when she goes through border control in the USA she says she's there for vacation. NOT to get married. Otherwise they'll think she wants to immigrate and that's a paperwork rabbit hole.

I appreciate people's comments, but no one actually answered this question. Just bumping this up to see someone can answer this: Can a non-resident entering visa free marry a Swiss citizen if that person does not intend to stay in Switzerland.


FYI, although I appreciate the kind suggestions, unfortunately going to the US right now to marry is not an option. I totally agree it would be easier and I wish it were an option.
