B Permit & possible separation from my partner

I have been in Switzerland with my partner (not same sex) for 4 years. She is Swiss, I'm American. We may be separating for 3-6 months to decide if we want to continue our relationship.

My B permit is tied to her. I have searched on the forum and found lots of things about divorce. I am guessing our situation would fall under that category.

My understanding is that if I signed a lease, the government would know. And I think I am also required to tell them if I move.

My question is: what would happen to my B Permit status if we did separate?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: B Permit & possible separation from my partner

We have been legal partners for 4 years. Although I do have a job and I am able to support myself, because of the covid situation, my employment is no longer guaranteed as the company is laying people off.

If I read your link correctly, it looks like if we've been together for at least 3 years, I should be ok. Is that right?

Do you refer to marriage when you say "legal partners"?

Re: B Permit & possible separation from my partner

That's part of the problem. We live in Bern, where they accepted legal domestic partners when we moved here. But, as far as I know, that is no longer the case.
So no, we are not married. This is what concerns me.

They might accept it as a circumstance to allow you becoming a dependent of your partner, but that does not mean they ever officially recognised the two of you being in an official relation where it concerns Switzerland.
