Canton registration - timings

Dears,
I'm an italian consultant and new to this forum, excited to relocate and start a new job in Zurich from September!

The employer told me I have to bring on the first day the "Meldebescheinigung".

I planned to rent a shared flat from beginning of August.

My doubt is: can I already apply now for the residency permit - having already the job contract and the sublet contact - or - I have to wait August?

I already queried the 'Volkswirtschaftsdirektion' but their answer was not clarifying.

Can't wait to sort out all the bureaucratic things and go peacefully in holidays!

Thanks

Welcome to the forum and to Switzerland.

Probably best to wait until August; there's a backlog of permit applications to be dealt with due to the virus lockdown so no telling how quickly it would be dealt with.

You can't register until you arrive in Switzerland, you must register before you start work.

Re: Canton registration - timings

Thanks both for the answers.

I decided to anticipate the rent of the apartment from the next week, I'll go in Zurich just one day for asking the residence permit, then back in Italy until I won't start working (September).

The solution is a bit expensive, but I want to spend August holidays without the anxiety of encountering bureaucratic issue a couple of days before starting a new job.

Thanks again for the clarifications!

Re: Canton registration - timings

Not sure that will work since they'll probably want to send your permit to your Swiss address. Not sure they'll send it to an Italian one. You'd need to make sure your name is on the Swiss post box for the post people to see. And box will probably fill up with junk mail in the meantime so you'd either need to put it on hold until you arrive permanently or get it forwarded to Italy.

There really isn't an issue. So long as you register before starting work you're fine. You could even register first thing in the morning before you start working and there'd be no problem.

Do you already have this? If so, super! If not, this is the part to focus on. Accommodation is not easy to find, in Zurich. But you must have an address at which you can formally register.

Formally registering means having a rental contract, and going down to the municipality to say you're new here, and here's your Italian passport, your work contract, and your rental contract, and then they to do the registration, called "Anmeldung". They then give you the certificate called "Meldebestätigung", which is proof that you are registered as residing in Zurich. It is the thing that makes you legal, here.

As an EU citizen, with a job contract, you will automatically get a permit to live here, no problem.

The thing you need to get it, though, is an address. If you already have your shared flat from the start of August, and you have a rental contract to prove it, then you have all you need. If you don't, then your energy needs to be focussed on finding that accommodation.

Very expensive! You’ll also have to pay Swiss health insurance from the date you register It really doesn’t take long to register, and it’s very simple.

Basically, you are saying that since I start to work on September 1, having an apartment one week earlier is more than enough, right?

As example, I can start renting from August 24th, going to the municipality and getting the same day the so called 'Meldebescheinigung'. In this way I also don't have to uselessly pay 1,5 months of health insurance.

Yes, a week is more than enough. Unfortunately, you'll have to pay the whole month's health insurance for August, they don't do part months.

Re: Canton registration - timings

You certainly do pay pro rata health insurance based on your arrival date if in the middle of the month

Re: Canton registration - timings

You will get the Meldebescheinigung/Meldebestätigung (Proof of registration) when you register at the city hall (In City of Zurich also at the local Kreisbüro). Right there and right then.

You can only register once you have an actual address and corresponding rental
contract.

It is a matter of a few minutes, usually less than an hour. (Because of COVID it might take some more time).

Yes, that'll be fine.... if you can find the place to rent from August 24th, say, as most shared flats, and I think that's what you're aiming for, rent for full months. However, you might be lucky if you look for temporary ("befristet") accommodation.

For shared flats, see

Things work a bit like clockwork here; usually very efficient. Welcome to the forum and to Switzerland! Enjoy your August holidays. Nothing like a holiday between jobs...no worries from the old job and no responsibilities from the new one yet. Pure bliss!
