Moving to Switzerland from US, my German girlfriend plans to move with me

Hi,

I am a EU national who is leaving US in a few months to start a new job in Switzerland. My German/American girlfriend plans to move with me and look for a job there. She has savings and I'll earn enough income to support both of us for some months, but I still have a couple of questions.

- Does anyone know about any potential problems she might have with this move as we are not married? I think she can live in Switzerland for 3 months with no permissions and look for a job and that can be extended but I am not sure the limitations of that as I am very new to Switzerland.

- She wants to bring her car from US to Switzerland (she bought it new 1.5 years ago and it might financially make sense to do it). Will there be a problem with that, as she won't have a job in Switzerland? One way around can be registering the car to Germany and drive it in Switzerland if that's an option.

Thanks in advance

She can be here for up to 3 months as a tourist, then she'll need to register as a job seeker if she wants to stay longer.

Potential problems are her American citizenship. Most banks won't consider her for a bank account; only Credit Suisse, UBS and PostFinance and she'll have to agree to them sending her account details on to the IRS to be able to open an account. She'll still need to file US tax returns and may owe the US tax on top of any Swiss ones, depending on how much she earns.

As for the car, I wouldn't bother. As well as shipping costs, she may need to have work done on it to meet Swiss requirements. Sell it and buy another one here when she's settled in.

If you have a Green Card you could also be subject to US taxation. Be careful.

The good news is that it will be easy please for you as both of you are EU nationals.

Your initial challenges will be:

A) Finding a place to live
B) Logistics of flying over, shipping your stuff and making sure you don’t pay tax on them by declaring them as personal effects. (Can only do this once)
C) Dealing with all the bureaucratic stuff about permits, bank accounts, health insurance and getting used to your new environment.

There is no problem for your gf to import her car to Switzerland so long as you jump through all the hurdles to get it shipped over, legally registered and insured here.

I would not recommend registering it in Germany this will create extra hassle and you will eventually have to register it here in Switzerland so just cut to the chase.

It is her call at the end of the day to way up the benefits vs the costs and make a decision if it would be worth it for her or both of you together.

A practical piece of advice is to convert your drivers license to a Swiss one within 12 months of arrival.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Given the political/social/health climate in the US right now, I would recommend the move to just about anywhere in the world. Switzerland is a paradise in comparison, and it starts with a sane government.

If you read the OP you'll realise that it is the OP posting the exact same query on reddit. So I think he's seen it.

Re: Moving to Switzerland from US, my German girlfriend plans to move with me

As I understand it, OP has the job, and OP's partner will be a tourist. Both are EU, so no problems there.

As to the car... can a tourist import a car? I think not. Since she does not have a job or a permit here, I don't think that she may import her possessions (therefore also not her car) together with her permit-holding partner's.

But if she visits as a tourist, finds a job, and only therafter gets her possessions, including her car, sent over as part of her own immigration, that would work.

Having said that, she should do proper research about the particular car make and model, and check with the authorities in Switzerland about whether she'd have to have anything done to it to upgrade it to Swiss standards, to get roadworthy clearance here.
