Permit B transition from Phd to Job

I'm a third country national currently doing a PhD in Switzerland. I have heard that when you find a job after the PhD, some get permit B where as others get a permit L. How do I know before hand which permit I would get and what should I do to make sure I would get a B permit instead of a L?

You can't, simple as that. It depends on the length of the contract: less than a year is an L, a year or more is a B. Also not sure if doing a PhD falls under the graduating from a Swiss uni rule. If not, then you'd be under the non-EU hiring rules and for those there are simply more L's than B's available in the quota system.

Re: Permit B transition from Phd to Job

AFAIK PhD counts as graduating from a Swiss university, though reportedly the actual benefits conferred by this are much less than the law would suggest. Also did this transition recently, budget a few months (2-3 ideally, minimum ~1.5 I would say). Your new employer does all the work, you just do all the waiting and nail-biting.
I have a permanent contract and got a 1-year B (non-EU).

I shared my story about transitioning from a (non-eu) phd permit to a “normal” B: https://www.englishforum.ch/3126890-post9.html

Though it’s really like this, you can’t know beforehand whether you get B or L.
