Get license plate / number

I have just transferred my UK driving license to a Swiss one (very easy - less than 24 hours turn around!).

I understand that a License Plate number is unique to a household rather than a car. How do I get this number so I can buy a car?

I think you have to buy the car first.

Not quite that way - for the time you own it the car is rigidly associated with the plates, which are shown on the registration document (known as a grey card over here) just as they are in the UK.

What's most different is that you can have multiple cars, or motorbike (but not the two together) on one set of plates, which you transfer to whichever vehicle you're using at any given time.

When you change vehicles the plates stay with you, not with the car. For these two reasons nearly all cars have very simple mountings which allow removal and refitting in seconds. Oddly enough, I've never heard of plates being stolen, as would certainly happen in the UK if they adopted a similar system.

If you're buying from a dealer there's nothing you need to do - simply negotiate the price and a pick-up date, they'll sort all the paperwork and get the plates for you.

It gets just a little more complicated if you're buying privately, as explained in MF's links, as you have to take the old grey card to the licensing centre who will issue you with the plates before you can drive it.

Which in all is not really complicated nor time consuming. It can also be done by mail. It is even more easy when you already have plates.

If you get the plates from a dealer you might state if you prefer an even or odd number or if certain digits should not appear. Not guaranteed you get what you wish for, but when you go to get plates you usually can choose from 5 different ones. 5 digit numbers (or less) and special combinations are put up for auction. https://www.auktion.stva.zh.ch/

You properly could even get the plates for a new car yourself. All you need is the fully stamped Form 13.20a and an insurance quote.

PS: Usually you can use only two vehicles on the same plate (Special rules for car dealers and antique collectors).

There is more to Switzerland than Zurich, you know. Quite a few cantons still use only 5 digits for most normal registrations.

Each canton its own rules In TG you can actually check for number availability and if it is free it will be put up for auction. If you are lucky you get your preferred number for not much (CHF 500 ). http://www.auktion.tg.ch/
The six digit numbers are properly the birthday dates.
