Zivilstandamt parent birth cert

Recently ,after no small effort, I obtained a birth cert for my son born in Switzerland from the Zivilstandamt in Solothurn. During this process they had asked for my original Birth cert and a notarised translation which I gave them, now they won't give back my original birth cert , they say I have to reapply to wherever it was issued for a new one.

I find this bizarre, the reason they give is that they need my birth cert for their civil registry, here is the answer I got from them. What I don't understand is why they need the original when they have a notarised translated copy????
