[Zurich] Marriage between Italian resident and non-EU tourist

Hi all, I know the question has been discussed over and over but I found many contradicting answers and the official sites mostly take into account the case of Swiss citizens. I also thought of asking by email, but I would like to first ask your opinion on this because I'm afraid it might backfire. I would be grateful if you can point me out to an official resource where I can get answers.

I am an Italian citizen, resident in Switzerland since 2017 with a B permit. My girlfriend is Taiwanese, currently resident in Japan for studies (yes, we've been separated for months by the corona travel ban, that sucked) but she'll be done soon and then ready to move to Zurich with me she will come to visit again in December (under current covid Swiss rules she'll be allowed to travel because we can prove we are an unregistered longtime stable couple that met in Switzerland before).

For various reasons that we thought carefully over and over, we would like to get married soon - December if possible, as soon as she arrives. Our first choice would be to do it here in Zurich. We have questions.

First of all, is it possible? I am resident as said, but she will be here on a tourist visa.

We are not planning to do any big ceremony for now, just need to put a signature. But what is the exact procedure? I've read it takes usually 5 weeks to get it done so I thought of get moving now.

Do we have to pay any special attention to *not* mention at the border control that she's traveling to get married?

Anything else we need to consider?

Thanks in advance for any useful reply ^^

Rather than a tourist visa, you need to apply for a fiancée permit for her to come here to help with preparations for the wedding. This is because you both must be residents here.

Contact your Civil Register Office to find out what paperwork you need to get married here.

Re: [Zurich] Marriage between Italian resident and non-EU tourist

Residency is not needed. It isn't Medeas fault as the English version of ch.ch is not correct. All what is needed is a rightful stay. This can be as a tourist. Even two non-resident foreigners can get married in Switzerland. However, you should get a special marriage preparation visa in case she wants to take up residency in Switzerland after the marriage.

The bigger problem is that a marriage in Switzerland can not be done in just a week and you should inform yourself what documents are needed and start to get them with the right stamps etc. After you submitted each and every requested paper they might check the authenticity. This can take months!!

See this official information:

Information relevant for Thai citizens:

As she is a Japanese resident she might also need a "Juminhyou".

You can definitely get married as a tourist, as I know of destination weddings that happen here. But you need to find out what paper work she needs (possibly more than if she’s none resident) ... speak to your Zivilstandsamt. No point in her getting here and not having the correct documents.

And just in case start immediately the procedure to get her the Italian Citizenship as soon as you are married so her life will be much easier with Swiss visas.

Just a quick update on this: the timing for marrying in December was too tight, impossible to do it, so we decided to marry in Taiwan this May instead

Stay tuned for the process of having a foreign marriage registered in Switzerland!
