Non EU B permit status after marrying EU B permit holder

Hello

I’ve read several threads but couldn’t quite find one most relevant for our situation. Basically, I’m an EU citizen with 5 year B permit and my partner is a non EU citizen with a restricted one year B permit tied to employer. I’ve been resident in Switzerland for 4 years now and We’re planning to get married soon. After marriage, would their non EU B permit be eligible for some kind of renewal/‘upgrade’ to match my EU B permit (i.e longer validity, not tied to employer, can change employer, move cantons etc.)?

Any insight is much appreciated! Thanks

Welcome to the Forum.

Talk to your cantonal authority since you'll have to fill out paperwork to get married in Switzerland anyway. Normally the non-EU changes to being a dependent of the EU person and receives the same permit. In your case, that's B.

Ah great, that makes sense thank you I will follow up on that. We are currently in different cantons, Vaud and Geneva, does it matter which canton we talk to and do the marriage paperwork with? We eventually plan to move and live together in Geneva.

Yes it does matter. Talk to the Canton where you both intend to live.

When I stopped working I had a non-EU C permit. It was converted to “Spouse of a EU citizen” without even discussing it with me.
