Basel Language Requirements for C Permit

Hi all,

Before I contact my local migration office, does anyone know if language certification is now a requirement to go from a B to a C permit?

Thanks!

Didn't you answer this question here?

https://www.englishforum.ch/permits-...ml#post3238480

A1 and A2 you said. Depends if you're applying at 5 or 10 years.

"After five years of residence. Foreign nationals applying for a C permit (which grants permanent residence) after they have resided in Switzerland for five years are required to prove that they speak the official language in their canton at level B1 and have written skills at level A1 of CEFR.

After 10 years of residence. Foreign nationals applying for a C permit after 10 years of residence in Switzerland must demonstrate written skills at level A1 and oral skills at level A2 of the CEFR in the official language spoken in their canton."

When I take the exam, do I need to show I have taken german class until B1 level or just simply take the exam?

You have to take the exam, and only language certificates from a select few organisations are recognised.

Re: Basel Language Requirements for C Permit

Hi all. Didn't want to start new thread and will post my question here.

Is anyone aware what is the criteria to be exempt from language test in order to obtain the C-permit? I have heard about if you are from any of the German speaking countries then it's OK (makes sense) but just recently very good friend got the C after her B expired, and the gemainde simply mailed it to her without any language requirements (she is is not from the above mentioned DE speaking countries, neither has documents from there).

I have been around CH for some time (still on a B permit) but rather moved around quite a lot - studied, lived and worked in 4 cantons already exposed to 3 languages. Mostly learned fair Italian while in Ticino. Been already some time in Basel, but definitely my DE is weak to take any exam.

It´s not only German speaking countries, there is a whole list of countries that are exempt from the language requirement.

The exemption is granted to citizens of countries that have a reciprocal agreement with Switzerland. See here:

Re: Basel Language Requirements for C Permit

That's interesting, and very helpful. Thank you guys! My friend is from one of those countries, so that's why the C permit was mailed directly without any applications and requirements.

I was almost sure there was a language exemption based on country for GER and AUT (for the DE speaking cantons) but now its clear and rather surprising. I thought (and hoping) was more like overall years of stay, education (e.g if you have obtained Swiss degree) etc.

I better check then the family tree if there was a Portuguese, Spanish or Greek great-great-great- grandma would be definitely faster to get that additional citizenship rather than improving my DE
