| | B Visa predicament - Can I be away from CH & keep visa?
Evening all,
Quick question about my B-Visa. Im just coming to around 3.5yrs here in Switzerland. Iv decided to stop working at my current job which will end at the end of August. My B-Visa is valid to May 2023. My question is, is my visa linked to my job? Am I able to go back to the UK and work for a period of time and then come back to Switzerland still on my current Visa? If I did this would I have to continue having an address here in Switzerland? I would actually be going back to the UK to start a PhD but after the first 6months im able to work remotely so would love to come back here to CH.
Thanks in advance for the advice |

The whole point of having a Swiss permit (not a visa) is that you live/work here. If you don't deregister when you leave then after 6 months the permit will become invalid anyway if you're not here.
You could continue to rent your place, pay Swiss health insurance, etc, and make sure to be back before the 6 month limit. But then you would have the problems of working for a foreign employer; there are threads about this, but it's not my area of expertise so you'd need to research that before you make any decisions.

A Swiss residence permit is for residents.

You would have to maintain an address and pay health insurance (ie, still be resident here).

It's a permit, NOT a visa!

Your B-permit remains valid for the duration specified. However, if you leave the country you must maintain a residential address (plus relevant Gemeinde registration), health insurance etc. in the country. If you leave without informing the Gemeinde and they get to know they might ask you to provide a new Swiss address or surrender the permit. It's not a question of 6 months outside the country, it's basically about whether you are an official resident or not: the job doesn't come into the picture until the permit comes up for renewal. That said, it probably won't be renewed if you work outside the country because B-permits are normally contingent on being employed in Switzerland and I'm not sure how things will work now that the UK's out of the EU.

Awesome, thanks for the replies. Lot so info that puts me at ease so thank you for that. Sorry for using the word “visa”, i should have worded it as a permit! |
