Brexit and UK passport renewal and stamps

Simple question this, I'm going to have to renew my passport soon. In the past when I used to travel more frequently I'd order a longer passport with more pages due to the number of stamps it would accumulate. With Brexit, are UK passports going to be stamped every time we arrive in Switzerland when we have a residence permit?

Why? If you have a residency permit, you do not need a stamp

I thought third country passports are just scanned on entry these days.

Not just third country, everyone (including Swiss) gets scanned on arrival from non-Schengen territories

I got two stamps last time I landed - on in Brussels and one in Geneva... then again, I didn't show my Swiss residence permit...

Didn't know you could "avoid" a stamp, that's good to know as it'll save me some space!

I believe actually that you must show your residence permit if you have one. At least this is what one immigration official at Zürich airport once told me. Though admittedly this was many years ago, pre-Schengen even I think, so things may have changed.

But people collecting stamps because they think its cool to have a stamp, beware.

Right after Brexit British passports were being stamped in and out of Schengen. But if you have a residence oermit, you shouldn’t be stamped.

If you’re British, you must now show your residence permit and not get a stamp. That’s what allows you to stay longer than 90 days in Switzerland (You are now restricted to 90/180 in the rest of Schengen)..

Probably depends on the country and maybe on the individual border crossing even.

A friend says he recently crossed from Serbia into Hungary and they were more interested in his COVID status than his passport. He didn't get a stamp.

Only once in hundreds of arrivals did the officer ask me -- Why are coming to Switzerland.. I replied, because I live here.. He glanced back at his little screen and said oh yeah.. Have a good day..

I've never offered my permit, usually don't even carry it.

Pot luck maybe.

Since Brexit you are required to travel with it.

Does this count for non-EU Schengen countries too? Say one returns to Zürich from Dubai via Frankfurt, would a Swiss resident need to get their passport stamped when landing in Frankfurt?

Apparently. Last time I returned to Switzerland from the other side of the Atlantic, casually via Frankfurt, I did not get a stamp.

Only showed the passport and residence permit.

As the article that Phil_MCR linked above says, having a stamp could potentially create the impression you have overstayed your visa previously.

Of course this is a situation that can be clarified, but you wouldn't want to risk it - meaning you might risk being taken into the interview room and having to answer all sorts of probing questions.

John, have another think. It is no hassle to travel with your permit and present it with your passport whenever asked by the airline or at immigration. Some Brits have been denied boarding because they don’t have their permit with them. There have been discussions here on EF on the subject.

To add a little caveat to this, I renewed by C-permit recently and was invited for a biometric photo and to give fingerprints at the Migrationsamt. The result of this is that I'm now the proud owner of a credit card sized C-permit that fits nicely into my wallet! No more of those stupid plastic EU IDs that are a pain to to carry around, Brexit dividend number one!
