Unemployment benefits of L and B work permit

Hello everyone,

I currently hold a permanent residence of Germany and will be moving to Zurich. I will have a 1 year contract. So, If I get a B or L permit and if I am unemployed after 2 years, am I eligible for unemployment benefits? Based on the unemployment benefits will my visa be extended (for the benefits I would need a valid visa)? I am a nonEU citizen with a family.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Unemployment benefits of L and B work permit

Nope, your B or L permit is renewed on a yearly basis, and the renewal is dependent on having a job. Being eligible for unemployment is very unlikely to be considered as a valid reason for renewal if you are non-EU.

Agree with the above, but you will be eligible for unemployment benefits until your permit runs out.

But isn´t it that non EU permits are tied to the employer initially? So if your work contract is no longer valid, the permit is no longer valid?

And there seems to be a six month minimum time allowed, in case you're unfortunate and the permit renewal comes just after losing your job:

roegner, not all non-EU B permits are tied to an employer, but it is not obvious which ones are and which ones are not. You have to ask the migration authorities what your personal situation is.

Re: Unemployment benefits of L and B work permit

Hi!

Would anyone know if an EU citizen who is on employment can renew his/her L permit while still on unemployment? Presuming that he/she would still be affiliated with RAV after the renewal date of the L permit.

This is an issue that is related to the one that started this thread but not exactly the same.

Thanks!

What does your RAV advisor say?

My RAV adviser did not know the answer unfortunately. You wouldn't have heard of a similar case?

"If you hold a valid short stay permit you may remain in Switzerland for up to six more months. This will give you time to find another job. However, you will need to obtain authorisation from the cantonal immigration or labour market authorities."
So you have at least 6 months. Not sure if those 6 months will come through an L renewal or by a separate authorization (my guess: the latter).

The official website forwards you to RAV for the details... contacting the Migrationsamt could also be an option.
