A friend of mine (non-EU) has been in Switzerland (Zurich) for 6 -7 years and he will get his C permit soon. Since he married officially recently, he is wondering if his partner gets C permit as well upon his promotion. And the major question about the citizenship, If his partner can apply for citizenship in three years when he is eligible. Thanks in advance.

Or does that only apply for Swiss citizens who have been citizens since birth?

Pretty sure it applies the same to spouses, such that, for instance, if only one of a couple has sufficient language skills they can get their citizenship first, then the partner can get theirs without needing the language requirement.

Was something we were considering before we decided to move from a German to a French speaking area.

2nd EDIT: Further reading reveals that the rules before 2017 did indeed allow it, which was when we were looking into it, so it seems I may nor have been mistaken at the time.

He would have to be Swiss before they married for her to be eligible for facilitated naturalisation.

Yeah, the law is worded the way that only persons who marry a Swiss citizen become eligible for facilitated naturalization after at least 5 years of residence and 3 years of marriage. One can always divorce and re-marry and wait 3 years, I suppose.

Thanks for all the comments. So it basically means that she has to stay in Switzerland for 10 years since her arrival to be eligible, right?
