Naturalization after departure

Hi guys!

Hope everyone is safe and well.

I had a question regarding obtaining a Swiss nationality and this is my situation:

1. I’ve lived in Switzerland since I was 13 for 8 years. That was from 2008-2016, I was a student here. Lived on the French side, mainly Vaud and Valais and was pretty fluent at the time as I did an internship there as well.

By law, from age 8-18 your years count for 2, so in total I have had about 13-14 years here.

2. In 2016 I left to Hong Kong and moved back to Switzerland in 2020 as a spouse to A British national on open permit B valid for 5 years. At the moment we are in Zurich and I work here.

Question is, can I apply for a Swiss passport? My concern is that I have left for 4 years and I just got back again. Or do I need to start from scratch?

I’ve read somewhere that the tenure doesn’t have to be consecutive and I could apply still if I spend recently and consecutively 2-5 years (depending on the canton) in a canton where I would want to apply.

Thank you and apologies if they was asked before, I couldn’t find the thread..

Re: Naturalization after departure

Your previous years count, but you have to fulfil the gemeinde/canton requirements, which require you to have lived there for the last X amount of years.

Re: Naturalization after departure

The federal requirement is that you have to have lived in Switzerland for 3 years before application.

Bear in mind, if you apply in Zürich, you’ll need to speak German not French

Re: Naturalization after departure

Would I still need to have a permit C to apply in my case?

Is that the case though? For getting a C permit, yes, but is it a requirement for naturalisation or does speaking any official Swiss language count?

Yes, it's now a requirement.
