Applying for a Swiss passport

Hello

I have recently started to think about applying for my Swiss passport - I have been in Geneva for 12 years and have a c permit (U.K. passport holder). The only thing is I have to improve my French a lot and expand my knowledge of Switzerland to pass the the tests. I have heard it can take quite a while between applying and sitting the tests so debating if I wait until I’m ready and then apply or apply and try to get up to speed in time for the tests. Another thing that may complicate things is that I am moving to Vaud early 2023 so wondering how that would affect things? Would Geneva decline me on the basis I am moving to Vaud? Any advice greatly appreciated

Re: Applying for a Swiss passport

Last I knew the testing of French in Geneva was quite a joke. Not sure if things have changed or not under the new procedures or not, but I knew people who got it without hardly speaking a word.
See if you know anyone who went through the procedure in the last 2 years or so.

If you move during the process it will be suspended as far as I know since you no longer meet the residency requirements. And there will be new commune/cantonal residency requirements in Vaud that you'd have to fulfil before you could make a new application. From this link you'd need to live in Vaud for 2 years minimum.

https://www.vd.ch/themes/population/...aturalisation/

Commune residency requirements depend on which one you move to.

Maybe apply immediately and hope that the process is complete before you move?

unlikely and it be costly thing ... however you may re-consider to move . There is not much else you can do as not registering at the new commune would void your permit so not really an option to stay-on-papers with GVA canton.

We have bought a house in Vaud so it’s not really an option not to move.

Re: Applying for a Swiss passport

In Switzerland you aren’t a citizen of the country, you are a citizen first of your commune of origin and second a citizen of your Canton. Under the normal naturalisation process someone who hasn’t lived in the Canton for the minimum period cannot become Swiss.

Likewise, not even the Heimatkanton!

If you apply now in Geneva you should be in time before your move to Vaud as process in Geneva is fast, 1.5 years approx.

This excluding likely delays for what I assume is your house being bulit in Vaud.
