Anyone trave to the USA with an NIE exemption letter from the US Embassy?

Hi.. we are about to fly to the USA to attend a funeral. As I am not American (anymore) but my adult kids are (both over 21), I require a "National Interest Exception" (NIE) from the US Embassy in Bern in order to bypass Covid entry restrictions for non-citizens.

Fortunately, I applied and received an NIE from the embassy via email last week. Kids are US citizens so they don't need one.

I called the airlines to try to get a definitive answer if all I need to show at the airport is a copy of the NIE email. It didn't seem the staff were up-to-date on this topic as it is probably quite rare. Has anyone checked into a flight to the US by showing a copy of the NIE email?

Perhaps I am the first to do so, in which case I will report my experience here after check-in. Thanks!

No experience but did you get your ESTA yet?
Just theorising that they may be controlling it that way.

Sorry for your loss.

Getting the ESTA was the easy part.
