Zurich - moving and re-registering vs school start

Hi all!

Long time reader, but first time poster, since we finally achieved escape velocity and just arrived in Zurich this week.

Our relocation agency could only find us a 2 bedroom furnished apartment for our family of 4 + dog, and I have to be working from home at this time.

We would very much like more space, and I found a larger airbnb which is appealing, it's available Aug 18. I don't want to have the kids switch schools on top of everything else changing right now, though. It seems tight to me whether we can get everything sorted out if we move to have the new school set up in time - I'm hoping for wisdom from the forum here. I think School starts on Aug 23.

I'm told to expect the school to reach out to us regarding school assignment, but was advised that they are on vacation and I could expect to hear back on the 16th. So I'd need to decide on moving or not before hearing back from them.

A catch I'm aware of: the current housing is in Kreis 9 but the new one is in Kries 7. We already registered in Kreis 9 on Monday the 2nd, but the soonest appointment for biometric collection was Aug 25, so it will be a while before we have permits in hand. We do have Meldebestätigungen, which seems like it might be sufficient to re-register at a different address.

If we were to move, would it go something like this:

1a) we move
1b) we register to the new airBnB address. I think I found how to do this online ( https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/prd/en/...in-Zurich.html ) Or should I do it in person to be more sure?

2) Registration somehow triggers the school district to learn they have new students, they'll assign schools based on the address and contact us?

3) The kids start school on the first day at the new school

Can we do the registration in advance of actually moving into the new apartment, with the goal of giving the school assignment process a head start? Or would it be reasonable to expect that if we registered on the 18th, that we would have spots in the right school the next Monday?

I'd welcome better approaches or suggestions, as you can probably tell, I don't really know what I'm doing ;-)

Welcome to the forum!

Accommodation
There's some discussion in Switzerland about whether an AirBnB "counts as" a place of residence. This seems to be different from municipality to municipality, and possibly from official to official. So, the first step would check whether the City of Zurich, where you are, will accept an AirBnB as your address. Hopefully someone here will soon advise, but if not, you can ask contact the municipality to ask them, directly.

If you're allowed to register there, you will probably need an "Einzugsanzeige" form from the AirBnB owner/agent, stating that you live there.

Having said that: are the services of your relocation agent part of your employment package? In that case, surely they should be helping you to find long-term accommodation?

Schools
Yes, you are right that school begins on 23rd August, in Zurich, this year.

Once you know your move is definitely happening, you can call this number to explain - in English - that the dates might not work out perfectly, and to ask that your children please be allowed to start school where they will then be going to continue.

However, if your children do not already speak German, they may be assigned into an so-called integration class, which provides German tuition, and other help towards finding one's way in the Swiss school system. Sometimes these are extra lessons in the same school building, parallel to the rest of the class. Some children attend school partly with their class (in German, for example for sports) and partly in separate lessons (to learn enough German to integrate). In other cases, the integration class happens in a completely different school, and the child stays there for some months and then makes the transition to the local school closest to their home. How the transition works is individual, depending upon each child's age, level of German to start with, and their progress.

If you're not already familiar with that, you might find this video helpful, made by two boys who moved from the USA to Switzerland, attended integration (or Aufnahme) classes, and now speak German and go to the local school.

You don’t want your kids to change schools, but what are you going to do when you find a permeant home? What are the chances that you’ll find somewhere near the AirBnB so they don’t have to change when you move?
