Re: Why do i want to be Swiss?

My real reason for wanting to become Swiss was to make my life easier and more secure. Being on short term zero hours contracts, I was always worried that immigration would decide they weren’t good enough. And with Brexit looming I wanted the ability to be able to leave for extended travel or to live somewhere else and be able to come back with no issues.

I didn’t say any of that - I was not sure how they would take it. Mumbled something about wanting to vote and have same citizenship as husband.

A bit sad to be so distanced from blood relatives in that way, especially elderly parents.
Oh, I suppose it depends on what kind of relationship one had during all the preceding decades. Sometimes, blood ties are strong, other times, not so much, and that can also be okay.

A friend of mine (English) lived here for ages, had a wife and two kids. One day he went to the "Gemeinde" and became Swiss. Next time he went to the "Gemeinde" he deregistered to go back to England, having gone through divorce. The guy there said "ahh, NOW I know why you wanted to become Swiss all of a sudden after all this time".

It was the only reason for him to do so. After all, he wanted access to his two sons when ever he wanted. Makes sense.

Re: Why do i want to be Swiss?

1. How do i think my future access to the civil rights.

I want to be able to vote on important initiatives like the one recently suggested on EF on the maximum weight of school bags.

2. Why do i want to be Swiss?

I am wanted in another country for a violent crime and I believe that having a Swiss passport will protect me from being extradited.

3. How do i participate in Swiss life?

I call the police when my foreign neighbors flush the toilet after 10pm.

Aren't these questions pretty nationalistic in nature?

Exactly. We don’t want just anyone to have a Red Passport.

Shouldn't the questions be expected to be nationalistic when applying for a nationality?

Re: Why do i want to be Swiss?

As you are from Geneva, when mentioning the events you've been to, I would put a particular accent on the Fête de l'Escalade as this is something dear to the Genevois, and its only celebrated in Geneva, for obvious reasons. Say that you have attended as a participant or a spectator, and mention the history behind the event, and the custom of breaking the chocolate cauldron whilst singing the song and so on.

There are perhaps other events (or foods or customs..) that are especially Genevois but this one springs to mind.

Hi all. Im in the process of filling out my naturalisation application and in a typical me fashion im panicking. The reason is that there are three questions that i need to fill out.

1. How do i think my future access to the civil rights.
I guess i have to say something about being able to vote?

2. Why do i want to be Swiss?
Well, im here for years already and i plan to stay so it makes sense?

3. How do i participate in Swiss life?
I go to all the events that happen in the canton?

Any other ideas? I cant really participate in organised groups or clubs because im working weird hours that are not fixed. Basically, my job is the reason im here but it also doesnt allow me to have a normal schedule. I dont want to lie in the form but how do i make them not throw it immediately in the trash?

Thanks for any tips
The people who will interview you will probably read your form beforehand.

And will probably ask you to elaborate on those topics a bit more.

So I would fill in stuff about topics that interest me and that I would be able to ramble on about with ease. Without boring the interviewer to death of course. So in my case I got to tell them about interesting and unusual things I experienced, observed or even did in Switzerland that I considered pretty much unique about the country and that I admired.

Ainsi périssent les ennemis de la République!

Which, ironically, is in the Genovoise patois.

Again not really. We have separate lives. We get on well enough when were together. When they get more dependent, then they'll move near my sister. We have a family whatsapp chat that has regular photos of my grandchildren and my sister's boy.

We considered family unification here, but their life is in the UK.

It just worked out that way. OTOH, we're very close knit with the kids and grandkids over here.

Re: Why do i want to be Swiss?

Thank you all for the suggestions. Its pretty nerve wracking to be honest because it’s something that has to be perfect. It needs to stand out a bit but not too much so that they think that the reasons are a complete lie.

Of course i may be overthinking it and everything will be fine in the end.

Next post coming in a year or so: “What do i say in the interview”!

Make sure you remember what you said in the application and parrot that.

This. In our case, I scanned our application forms before sending them in. Just to make sure I avoid the "did I write that?" scenario.

I wouldn't need to do that as I have pretty much firm opinions anyway so I wouldn't need to worry about forgetting what I had said previously.
