Is it possible to get a Work permit without a job?

Hello,

Just wondering if it is possible to get a work permit in Switzerland without having a job? (I have an Australian passport) or do you need to find a job first and try and get them to sponsor you?

HELP PLEASE!!

You can not get a work permit on your own as a nonEU person. You must have a company sponsor you. The employer makes the request for the permit.

My 5 cents.

B permit is issued only for person which has already an employer, since the B permit is the reason for a person to stay in the country. Swiss immigration policy is a bit close especially for non-EU people, so it could be hard to find a company which will start process of preparation of B permit for you unless you are a special and extra valuable guru which the company really wants to work with.

In my case the whole time to make B permit took more than 1 year, and I was living in Ukraine.

Re: Is it possible to get a Work permit without a job?

Hey
I am from Oz too and asked yesterday at the local office that sorts permits etc out (Kreisburo). I was told that you have 3 months to stay without a job, and once you find a job then your company gets the permit for you.
It is possible to apply for a 'looking for work' permit but apparantly it is very complicated, and when you get a job you have to change etc - so it is a massive hassle basically. So the best option is to get a job within 3 months and then it will all fall into place.
I am still hunting after over a month here and it is driving me mad ;-)
Hope that helps

Be cautious as to how you interpret this info (even if it comes from the powers that be). Your 3 months may relate to your status as a tourist here.

Sure you may look for (and find) a job within these 3 months, but i am almost certain that you would required to return to your home country whilst the work permit application is being processed.

The looking for work permit i have not heard about but others may be of help.

You wouldn't have to go all the way back to Australia while
work permit is being processed. You could go to Germany, for
example, and pick it up.

That is what I did without a problem.

Re: Is it possible to get a Work permit without a job?

Hello, we had the same problem as my husband is non-EU and had to apply for a job here. If you enter as a tourist, you have to leave the country before the 3 months expire and then enter again on your work permit. Luckily if you leave in Geneva, this could be as easy as hopping over the border to France in a round trip of 10 minutes!
Good luck with the job hunt!
