questions about entrance visa

Hi Everyone,

I am fairly new to the forum, but have been having a really good experience thus far.

My question for you all deals with obtaining an entrance visa if I am already in Europe. I am American and have just organized an internship with a Swiss company. They are trying to apply for my entrance visa and were hoping I could pick it up in Germany, because I am currently studying here in Heidelberg. The only problem might be that I'm not registered in Germany as I have been here less than 3 months.

Does anyone have any experience with obtaining an entry visa? Will I ultimately have to fly back to the US to pick up my visa at the Swiss embassy?

Thanks for the feedback in advance,
Lisa

Re: questions about entrance visa

I'm pretty sure you can pick it up from the embassy/consulate general nearest to where you are - we were told Munich I think...or was it Frankfurt ?

The application form that your employer filled out should have somewhere that you nominate the embassy..

Also, I recommend once you know the application has been lodged, to email the consulate (In Germany) and politely explain that your employer has submitted your application for entry visa/work permit, and give them your full name (as per your application/passport) and all your contact info (address in germany, phone number, mobile, email)...the information from the form is transmitted electronically, and in our case not all the info came through - they were going to wait a few days then eventually post a letter to our address asking us to come in to complete the process. Instead, because I had emailed them, the woman in the office emailed me as soon as the notification came through (an electronic procedure)...hope that makes sense ? Also, my husband's procedure got separated from mine and the kids (dependant visas) so his was approved first, and the lady in the office was polite enough to phone us personally to let us know to come in any time to get the remaining visas - I was impressed with that!

We also could have posted our passports to the office, had them processed an returned via post, but it was much quicker to just go there in person. Two hours later it was all done. There was a fee - $65 I think. Also, the 'entry visa' is a fancy sticker that goes into your passport. Make sure when you cross the border into Switzerland that you show them your permit and comment that you are approved to work here. They will apply a stamp (date stamp) to your permit and this will 'prove' that you arrived legally within the dates on your permit...this can help later if there is any question about your date of entry.

Also, once your work permit is approved, and you arrive legally within the right time-window, and you register with the local authorities (within 8 days of arriving), then you are covered for health insurance, but have three months to apply. Take this into account as they will back-date your insurance bill to your date of entry or the start of the month around that date...

Thank you for the response! I dont think it should be a problem to pick it up in Germany then, which will save me trip back to the US.

Hi Lisa

Please let me know if you went ahead and went to Germany - and did they help you even though you weren't a German national?

Re: questions about entrance visa

Dear capenomad,

I'm sorry that I cannot be of help, but my internship was actually rejected by the company after they discovered the difficulties of obtaining the work permit, as I already had an L permit in Switzerland. I'm currently working in Germany. I hope that someone else has a better answer for you!

Regards,
Lisa

sorry to hear - you don't have to tell me about the "difficulties regarding obtaining work visas"....holy crap. We've just experienced it ourselves! But luckily its been granted.
