Travel to and from Italy on 'B' Permit?

Hello all,

Apologies if this has been asked before.

A group of us want to go on a day trip from Switzerland (vaud) to Italy (aosta) this weekend.

One of the party is having their passport renewed (US Citizen) but has a 'B' permit. This means, I assume, that they can't travel outside of Switzerland?

The party is two UK passports (and B's), one US passport (and B) and one Canadian (and B).

Not going to happen is it?

B Permits do not mean a thing to the Italians (or any other country). If you don't have your passport with you, you shouldn't cross the border. Though I've done it before and have not been asked to show it (used my B Permit at the hotel in Venice instead of my passport).

Re: Travel to and from Italy on 'B' Permit?

If they have US passport they can probably enter Italy without a visa...

I'm Aussie and I can go up to 3 months in the EU, 3 months in the UK, Singapore, New Zealand, Canada, USA, as a tourist without a visa.

We went to the Uk for the weekend from here with our L permits and the check-in in Birmingham checked that we had our L permits so we could return to Switzerland (otherwise we'd need a 'return' ticket out of Switzerland/Europe...)...

So, don't forget your passports and permits and don't lose them !

If this person doesn't currently have their passport on them, then I'd suggest they phone the US consulate/embassy in Switzerland and double-check the procedure...they might fast-track the passport renewal if you've given them enough time...

Personally, I wouldn't want to be travelling anywhere outside my local area without my passport and visa...
