Unemployment Benefits to Non EU?

Hi guys,
I am a non EU citizen, working in Switzerland for about 15 months now in the domain of Finance and switched my job once during these 15 months. As the financial crisis unfolds, I am trying to prepare myself for the worst, which is getting laid off. Am I entitled to any unemployment benefits ?(have been paying all the taxes, pension contributions and stuff for 15 months), and how much time will I have to look for a new job?
Appreciate your help !!

Re: Unemployment Benefits to Non EU?

As far as I am aware, you are entitled to unemployment benefits in Switzeralnd as long as you have been employed in Switzerland for 12 months within the last 2 years. The important thing to do is to report to your local cantonal employment office as soon as possible after receiving your notice.

I am not aware of a time limit for benefits, but you need to demonstrate every month that you are actively searching for a new job.

The only difference for EU vs non-EU is that if you are an EU national you can have worked for some of the 12 months in another EU country and still qualify. See this thread for more info on that (although not specifically relevant to you I know).

Re: Unemployment Benefits to Non EU?

if you're non-EU and on an L-permit (even if it's your 2nd L permit), I heard you are not entitled to benefits...even though you have to pay the government various deducations every month...pathetic if oyu ask me, and treatment not like 2nd class, but like 3rd class citizen.

Re: Unemployment Benefits to Non EU?

There is some kind of unemployment insurance, that I have been paying every month and I have a B type residence/ work permit in Switzerland. I am sure of the fact that the insurance company has to pay me if I am unemployed, whether I am in Switzerland or I decide to go back to my country of origin.
What I am going to check asap is, how many weeks/months can I stay around in Switzerland, in case I loose my current job and looking for another takes time.

ivanthegreat - just wondering where you heard this, and if it was not at the cantonal employment office, have you checked with them if it is true or not? It would be great if you could post here with the official answer to this as I imagine it could help others.

Re: Unemployment Benefits to Non EU?

Hi

My husband is a non-EU citizen with a B-Permit and was laid-off in September '07 having worked here for a 5 years (although 12 months is sufficient). He had absolutely NO problems with receiving unemployment.

The limit is 400 paid days which works out to about 18 months. The daily amount paid is between 70 and 80% of your average salary over the last 12-24 month to a maximum of about CHF 120'000. (80% is paid if you have kids). The monthly amount varies slightly in that they pay the number of work days per month.

Hope this helps

Kind regards
Nats
